Puritan Silver Hat Buckle?

The CT Puritans were the first Europeans to settle in the area where I live beginning in the 1650's. When I started searching for their material culture seven months ago , one of the objects that was at was at the top of my list was the square buckle on their signature conical hats. Did I finally unearth the object of my desire?

I'm now reading the capotain buckle is a false stereotype, but that hat buckles were fashionable in a later period. Hmmm..., but what to think when they show up in an early colonial settlement area.

Looks like it could have been gold plated. I think the puritans would not have gone with fancy and flashy. I'm no expert just my thoughts on it. A hat buckle would be really cool though!

Looks like ferrous oxide (rust) all over it making it a modern sash buckle.
