First, I'm new to detecting. I just got a Quattro off eBay about 10 days ago and have spent about an hour a day trolling my back yard since then. I've had some success finding a ton of pennies, a few dimes (one mercury), and a quarter. Everything I've found has been about 4 inches down. Being a good student possessing Andy Sabisch's "Mastering the Quattro" book I decided to try the coin garden. I buried a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter all about 6 inches down in my vegetable garden. I didn't bother throwing dirt over the tiny holes that I dug and made sure none of the coins were on their sides. The results or lack there of floored me. My expectation was to be able to pick up clear signals and be able to hone in on pinpointing. Instead...not a single signal for any of the coins. I have the detector set to Coin mode and haven't made any adjustments to sensitivity or anything else besides volume and noise cancel. There are power lines within 30 feet and I never bothered removing any other metal from the garden before conducting the test. Any suggestions? Should I try all metal and crank up the sensitivity?

First, freshly buried coins won't give good results, but I would think six inches would be OK. Try the all metal mode and see if that improves it. If the electrical wires were going to effect you, you'd hear it in the detector. How does the detector behave in an air test? Minelabs don't air test at max distance.

If all else fails you can send it into Minelab for repair. This is why I don't recommend any purchases from ebay as you never know what your getting and that maybe why it was being sold.

Good Luck......

Thanks for the advice Sandman. I wanted to wait a while and spend more time with my Quattro before responding. I've experimented a little with the sensitivity setting and have had some luck. I still seem to be getting a lot of trash or perhaps false signals in some places. Sometimes I'll have 2 or 3 different signals in one single sweep. I'll keep swinging and learning how the Quattro works. If anyone has any other ideas or advice I'm all ears. Thanks.

I have a quattro and Andy's book i run in all metal and have found allot more silver and clad i have found a silver dime at 10" . The quattro will null out and miss the good stuff if you do not run in all metal i hope this will help good luck, i have moved to the SE.
