I put three candidates to a vote this afternoon:
1) take a nap, 2) vacuum the house, 3) go metal detecting. Guess what won!? I went over to the silver farm for a while, trying to poach a few coins that I might have missed during the dry days last summer. My first signal was a chirpy one, not solid like a coin usually sounds on my XLT, and I thought maybe I had a nickel. Well, none of our nickels have Queen Elizabeth on them, and this wasn't Canadian. I scored a 1960 Half Penny from South Africa, slightly bigger than our quarter. It's bronze and so ugly that I won't even try to put a picture up. Someone holed it through the date, but three digits are readable and it can only be a 1960. The other good find of the day was a gathering of three wheats in one hole, the oldest a 36. Overall, managed $.18 and the Half Penny, which beats a nap, I guess. At the bookstore this morning, I managed a pair of the new Oklahoma quarters, both from Philadelphia; that set is nearly up to date, just missing some of the Denvers from the last few years. Our forecast is for reasonable temps the next few days; hopefully I'll stumble on something a little more shiny.

So Nick, do you like Tom Tucker Southern Style Mint Ginger Ale? Is yours green or clear?
Can't find Cott any longer. Must be off the market...

Ya know, if she promised treasure trove laws here like they have in the UK, she might get my vote. :P

My neck of the woods we need to mix our own...we always have fresh mint...the wife has it growing everywhere...hot summer day we mix a batch...Canada Dry Or Vernor's...Halfdime turned me on...now I'm addicted...

Who knows Grape Kool-Aid might be next...Henry is very influential... :o :)

Nick

We grow mint, ginseng, blue & black cohosh, goldenseal, snakeroot & lots of other herbs on a 22 acre herb sanctuary.
Sometimes we make drinks with herbs... i'll give ginger ale a try with ginseng and let you know how it turns out.

Sanat, I just noticed your signature; maybe I should have titled the post "Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl." And it appears that you know your Mint Ginger Ale; is Regent still on the market?

Hi Henry

First I apologize if it looks as though i am hijacking your thread... not my intentions at all.

Not familiar with Regent... may be an old company or bought out by another company. I do vaguely remember that name but not sure it has to do with bottled drinks. My memory just is not what it used to be. Actually it never was.

My signature is about love of All (including Metal Detecting) not about sex so you are safe with your post title :icon_sunny:

Nice find on the half-penny. Now that spring is arriving maybe we can get out more. I definitely agree that the third choice was the correct one, then when you return choice #1 is executed - take a nap. The carpet will just have to wait!

The silver farm sounds like a gold mine for finding neat coins. With the ground being damp then even deeper coins might appear.

Good luck now that the weather is finally changing

Henry,
Good to see you are back in business. How much of that place have you not even detected yet? Do you dig everything above iron?

Not that long ago, three brands of MGA were available here: Tom Tucker, Cott and Regent. Cott was green, so my sister-in-law called it mouthwash! Regent may have been a Pittsburgh area brand. As for the signature, I know that it is the end of "Abbey Road" except that "Her Majesty" follows about 17 seconds later (on my CD). This little snippet refers to, of course, Queen Elizabeth, and Paul sang it at her 50th Jubilee. I don't mind my thread being hijacked; conversation is what it's all about, no matter what direction it goes!

Bob, I've detected just about all that's detectable. Since I've been there since May 31 last year, seasonal changes have resulted in finds that were missed in previous visits. Ground that was drier in July and August is pretty damp now. What I appear to have missed the first time are pennies, mostly. My followup visits now aren't yielding a lot of silver. There are other areas of the farm that circumstances have placed out of reach; for example, a leaking well head has turned an area about half an acre into a wetland. Given the results of the rest of the farm, there are probably lots of goodies resting in the quagmire. Unless that well goes dry, and we have a severe drought, that's where they'll stay :'(.
