Me and a buddy have been prospecting in east ala and have found a few flakes here and there and I have just been adding mine to a vial I had from when we carried our ol'lady to the consolidated mine in north ga and all of it has turned silver but his still has that yellow glow to it but we have not added the gold we find to his vial only mine so my question is what is making my vial turn silver maybe the water from the creek we are prospecting???

Yep thanks Kevin but other then water pumps all of my equipment has been made by me or passed down might not always be the prettiest but it works lol
I have four boys and two girls that I am trying to teach self reliance to so we build what we need only buying the bare minimum when it comes to our hobbies or non essentials. And unfortunately until I find that good pay streak that takes me from hobby prospector to full time prospector this is just a hobby.
And again I thank you all for the help and info y'all have shared our I might have just kept throwing out the good stuff lol

Thanks for the info Kevin but "buy "is a dirty word in my house these days, still might come down to that.I do want to be safe. I do have some wide open space I can use was just thinking about lighting a camp stove iron skillet on top and walking away for couple hours . Not Real safe but now that it's raining fire dangers gone. No hurry it's in a vial put away.
JFI,once Mercury becomes gas,it laeves a VERY toxic residue that can be absorbed through the skin......everything within distance will be contaminated....Many People who thought they knew all about mercury.......are dead

I like what Kevin said, let somebody else clean it off for me. Then all I have to worry about is sticky fingers. But at least I'm around to keep digging.

That tube design might be "cheap" but you get what you pay for!

GOOD retorts have a sysatem that collects the mercury via a condensing coil
similar to a still.

The tube just lets it go out the bottom or vaporize which is bad for the environment.

Just MY personal opinion. DYODD "Do your own due diligence"

Not true Got4, you put the tube base in water so the merc condenses in the water. It works just great to recover the mercury safely and simply.
