Question about quartz

I have a large chunk of quartz, its the white colored stuff about twice the size of a basketball.

Could it contain gold and if so, how would i find out? This "chunk" was found in a farmers field
in east central Wisconsin.

Gold in pure white quartz is very rare, although there are beautiful specimens of such out there. Just a guess but I'd say 99.9 percent of pure white quartz is just that, pure white quartz.

Blacksheep,do a bench test with a good gold detector.Break it up,crush and pan it out.Is Wisconsin really known for big specie gold or just occasional glacial gold?........Dave

Dave is right. Run a metal detector over it in all-metal, no discrimination at all, as much gain as possible. Then if you think there might something in it, you need to break it up to be sure.

Dear blacksheep;
Gold in lily white quartz is very rare in most parts of the world, with a notable exception being Motherlode gold in central California. I've seen some beautiful specimens in snow white bull quartz from there and it's spectacular, but rare.

Much more common in white quartz is iron pyrite AKA fools' gold. I've found white quartz specimens that were sparkling with pyrite.

Can you post a picture of it? If it's crystal quartz it might contain Gold. If it's bull quartz it probably doesn't.
