Please help me understand the process...

Banks take in half dollars through tellers, coin machines as well as other banks. Then the bank turns them into the "Fed" who in turn re-rolls them and sends them back to the bank/banks. Is this my thought on this process correct?

Last week I bought a bag of rolled halves and did really well (bank A). Is it correct to think that the silver coins in that $500 bag was part of a much bigger vein of silver? Would the $500 bags before or after the dream bag I got hold as many or more silver from the same vein?

I tried hitting several of the banks that receive their coins from the same bank as bank A does, but didn't find anything great... just a few silver coins. But the bag id numbers were way off from the dream bag I received.

Also, from my record keeping... the math on ends really seams to come very close to the ratio that are in the total bag/box. I recently searched a $500 bag that had 11 silvers showing on end that produced 119 inside. With the 10 bags that show no silver on end... I have found no more than 1-9 silver coins inside, with many of the bags producing no silver.

My other numbers are...

3 ends out of 50x2 produced 27 and 22 inside.
4 ends out of 50x2 produced 31 inside.
1 end out of 50x2 produced 13 inside.

It really seems to end up pretty close to the 10% ratio. I am curious to hear what you all have found.

Thanks for the info!!

I've been searching boxes of halves for over 2 years, and haven't found much of anything to write home about. Finds are rare and I seem to do much better with hand-rolled. This, I believe, is due to the heavy competition that I've had here since day one. ffd

First I think you are referring to boxes and not bags.

Second, I wouldn't get too worked up chasing certain boxes. They key is consistency. If you do a certain number of boxes per week, over time, your average will be around 0.4% silver, or 4 silver halves per box. Sometimes you will go through a dozen boxes of more and not find anything and then you will hit that special box that reminds you of why you are doing this. So far this year I have done quite a few boxes and had 44 "skunk" boxes, 2 that were around 3% silver, and around 10 that had one or two silver in them.

I think we all to some degree keep some records concerning what we find and when. I guess this is an attempt to justify the time and energy involved and assure ourselves that it is worthwhile. For the same reason many CRH'ers mark their coins to try to understand a little more about why some days are better than others and predict what the next box will hold before we get it.

I do better om road trips then boxes. While doing the road trips i take notes , competition, small silver ,large silver ,sent back, and never see them are most of the notes i take to figure out where and how i look next.

This is incorrect. The Federal Reserve does not roll coin or deal directly with banks. The banks deal with a carrier (Brinks, Loomis, Garda, etc.) Within a Federal Reserve Branch District, there will be designated carriers that serve as Reserve vaults. They are required to keep a minimum on hand. In fact all carriers will keep a certain amount to satisfy their business needs, but the designated carriers are required by the Reserve to keep a minimum to serve the district. For example, if Garda has 10k on hand in their inventory and has a request for 12k, they will go to one of the designated Reserve vaults (Brinks) and pick up an additional 2k to satisfy the request. For security sake, the Federal Reserve limits the number of entities that visit the actual branch along with the frequency of visits. Carriers do not come and go at the respective Federal Reserve Branch.

The Reserve will "Push" inventory to the designated Reserve vaults when the minimum amount is breached.

There is really no way of knowing for sure, but odds are that all the silver in the "vein" didn't magically find its way into 1 lone bag, but ordering more bag(s) from the same bank (although I would probably do so - sure can't hurt) doesn't guarantee success. The bank could have had that bag for a long time, and the rest of your vein is long gone. The reason I say that is that I have never known or heard of a bank keeping boxes/bags of halves on hand. I don't think the bank ordered them "just to have." The only reason I can come up with that you were lucky enough to stumble across this dream bag is that they were ordered for some other CRHer who never picked them up.

After that dream bag, I personally would have to order more bags from the same bank (if they will do that for you) just to satisfy my own curiosity. Good luck, and keep us posted.

All your assumptions a fairly corredt.

In some cases with smaller banks in smaller towns they will have a central bank that takes in a nd may even process their own coins.

A big thanks to everyone who took time to respond to my questions. :headbang:

Nope... I get $500 bags from banks. These bags are rolls sealed in a clear bag. Not coin machine bags.

Nope again... just trying to figure out some more info on the process. The more a person knows about the process, the better off they will be... like anything in life.

It really, like always, comes down to the math... with some luck involved for variables.

Thanks for your response. It fills in a variance gap.

Great to see I'm not the only one applying statistical probability to the process.

Thanks for posting!

Thank you for your insight!! I found your info very helpful.

I appreciate your help!

Thanks... I did get more bags/boxes from every bank, that I'm aware of, the supplier distributes too. I hit some silver here and there, but nothing that appeared to be associated with the original "vein" of silver. Although, some 1966 Kennedy's definitely appeared to be from the same original source.

I guess a guy has gotta try.

Thanks for your input.

Thanks... seems to be true for smaller towns.

no, not in this game.....it really comes down to luck, the math is the one involved with variables. such as someone dumping a hoard, tellers picking through the coins, cross shipments from other carriers etc.

I/we see no rhyme or reason to Box totals or any relation to enders, can recall 2 Boxes with a single ender & that was all that was in them, or one box the first roll took out with an ender had 11 in it but whole box had only 27 .

we just did this recently....can't find the post, but it was asked in the post about end roll silver and the ratio of keepers found. everyone was different. some got more some got less. besides what does it matter, your gonna search em all anyway.

Ah but we love to play the game. I always ask my wife and kids to guess my potential pull based on the number of silver ends showing.

My rule is 10 /1 and I win most of the time.

So have some fun while your searching. Nothing wrong with that is there?
