Hey all, this one is for gator (I hope he sees it)
Anyways, I was wandering around debitage piles from "the big sift" as mentioned in a thread a week or two ago, and there's, as best as I can tell, hundreds of these...my question is if they're what I think they are...lightning whelk artifact/choppers? Just wanted to hear your thoughts...
Thanks

The whelk shell was used for alot of tools.
Alot of them were Hafted to a handle and used as hammers, picks, adze type tools..and many were merely broken to allow access of a blade to cut the animal loose from its shell for eating.

The one in your second photo appears to have use wear as a possible hammer or adze..it's. Broken anyway ... looking closely there is tell tale signs of hafting or not.
Alot of the ones used as an adze were broken during use and you may only find one part or the other.

Lemme throw in a couple pics of all the piles of shell leftover tomorrow when it's light...I think I saw a couple of the spiraley-shaped pieces like you showed too but I only had a few mins to walk around

Thanks for the help

No problem.
I would be willing to bet with the people that were there and people's attention being pulled in many directions there are probably many artifacts left behind.

That's it!

Gatorboy is a wealth of knowledge about coastal artifacts. It is great to have his expertise so readily available.

My skin is thick .. opinions from folks who don't care for me are cool.
