question on buying artifacts??

Hey there guys, I have a couple of questions. Well, to start off I have never bought artifacts before b/c I usually just go out and find my own, but I have been thinking about buying a few to add to my new custom display case w/ the rest of my collection. One, who can I trust? Two, where to look? To be honest with you, I am really having a hard time trusting the websites that do have artifacts for sale. I know some are members of well known artifact clubs, etc... and say they can be trusted but I am still skeptical.. If you guys know of anyone who is trustworthy please let me know, b/c the last thing I want is to spend my money on junk items... I know if it looks too good and priced too well, then it must be too good to be true, hahaha. I see that some of you do buy artifacts, maybe you can help me.... Any info would be great, and thanks...

First and foremost, make sure they are a member of AACA (authentic artifacts collectors association) and that their artifacts are Guaranteed with a lifetime Warranty on Authenticity.

Imo ebay is too much of a gamble, mske sure the dealer is AACA member, at least 30 day return option.

I like this site, lots of Tx stuff in here. I've never had any issues or questionable deals.

Yeah, I second that BuckleBoy. Be very very careful buying artifacts. Here in Colorado, they are now going after the buyers. Which is probably where they should have started first. It's a touchy subject, and I have my own beliefs, but it's not my place to pass judgement on any of those folks involved in the sale of artifacts. I don't personally know the circumstances of how they were obtained.

My best advice is to get to know the seller...If you choose E-bay...Look at all the feed back,& if you not sure,don't buy.....If ya go through the aaca.Ask other members bout them,get thier feel....But don't....DON'T just look for aaca sellers...Some may have joined just to use the the logo...jmo good luck

The biggest problem with artifacts is are the real or reproduction. A lot of fakes out there today.

The next problem is do not purchase any artifact claimed except from private property.

If they say they are from public property , report them. If some one says one thing like from public property, and gives you a paper saying from private property report them also.

Cover you self in these situations.

ShopDog was wanting to sell some of his stuff Abarnard. Beware of people contacting you with stuff to sell though. Lots of people getting husseled (sp?). You take a huge gamble when buying. Thirty7 and Dork have been collecting a long time listen to them and take their advice. : (

These are two guys I would trust. The first deals in a lot of Texas artifacts, though not a lot of high grade pieces but he may be able to acquire some. The second link is someone I have bought off of before and I trust him completely.

Like others have said, be very careful what you buy on Ebay. You can get ripped of very quickly on there and just because they have AACA beside their names doesn't mean a thing if they don't actually back up what they sell.

I only buy from family, friends, and farmers. The most important thing is to educate yourself on what authentic points look like.
The way some people are talking on here is there are more cons than honest dealers. I don't think that's true.

No but with all the people buying reproduction paleo everyday...Makes you wonder where they all go. So many clovis points found now days. People are either honest or they are not.

Most importantly do the research, educate and inform yourself of what to look for in the differences between authentic and reproduction artifacts. Bennet has a really good book on the subject, from the obvious to the technical, I recommend it to anyone considering buying.

A spurious dealer can be a member of the AACA, it's been proven. Ebay, believe it or not, is where I have aquired some of my highest authentic quality artifacts. Bottom line is the feedback rating and if they offer a guarantee. In my opinion Ebay is safer than any other outlet soley because you can use paypal and that means you are protected.
