I have had limited success on taking close ups of my finds. My camera does have a Macro feature, but i can not seem to get in as close as I would like without blurring the image.

I have taken several shots and picked the sharpest one, edited it ( sharpen, lighten, crop etc..) to get it presentable then posted it.

Is all that really necessary in order to get a presentable picture. I am using a Cannon Sureshot camera and was wondering if there is something more Macro Friendly on the Market.

Any suggestions?????????

Thanks in advance.

Don't know about your camera, but mine requires that the zoom also be in the right position in macro mode. The little flower icon lights up when the zoom is right.

Macro magnifies effect of camera shake, so you need a fast shutter speed (lots of light) or a tripod. It also has a very shallow depth of field, so if the object has any depth, only part of it will be in focus. At macro ranges, just moving the camera forward or backward 1/8" will throw it out of focus. Depth of field can be increased by selecting a small aperture, which also requires lots of light.

In short, make sure you have the right camera settings, macro mode + zoom, steady the camera, and make sure the subject is well lit.

Hey Ray,

The closest you can get with a non-SLR digital camera will be with the Canon PowerShot S1 IS...it can auto focus at about 2 inches, manual focus at about 4 :) most others will be a foot or more.

With my little old Kodak Easyshare DX7590 I can get to within I few inches. Zoom has to be all the way out, or off, normal. And I can hold it with my hand, without a tripod. It does a pretty good job for me. I sometimes have to try a few times to get the focus right. Like closer, farther from subject or maybe a different angle..

Have a regular, non digital, SLR and it's macro lens is the only way to focus really close up. Otherwise there's no hope.

Not sure about digi cameras though. Sorry.
