Quick question about platinum?

Hey guys, I posted an ad on craigslist that I was looking for older sites to detect and someone reported that they had lost their ring on their property which has been inhabited since 1954. So my questions are 1. What does platinum ring up similar to? i.e. nickels, dimes, quarters, etc. and 2. Do you think it would be worthwhile to search the yard after finding the ring for older coins? Thanks for your input.

I don't know what platinum would register at. But I would say it would be worth detecting. Could be silver there plus kids could have played in the yard before the house was built.....Matt

Depending on the size of the ring, it could show up anywhere on your detector. You would literally have to dig EVERY single signal there to have a chance at finding it. I wouldn't do it, not for a 1954 house, maybe for an 1854 house. Not unless they were willing to pay me for my time to find the ring.

A ladies ring will most likely read as foil, they tend to be narrow and thin. A mans wedding band will read in the pulltab range. ( I've found two men's platinum wedding bands, both read pulltab on the meter.

depends on how big the search area is. I would do it only if i could keep everythin else i find and with the understanding you have dig every signal as platinum as said before could ring up anywhere on the detector, so the lawn may show some damage with many targets.

I dont use a screen or meter, but on the Excal and Sovereigns it screams, usually like pull tabs, ......Trouble is many pull tabs scream like silver, as well as gold....

Just to give a little more info I believe the yard is about 6000 square feet so not terribly large, and yes they said I can search the yard and keep anything else I find. I think I'm going to give it a shot, I don't have anything to lose, and I'm sure it will make the person very happy to have their ring back (and they offered a reward but I declined).

Depending on size, I have had plat read from +8, +17, +20,+21, very similiar to gold readings on the XLT.

Digging every target might not be so bad.

I think that depends on how old they are. My yard is full of trash. These days it is common for contruction workers to actually bury trash on the property rather than properly dispose of it. I keep finding all kinds of those metal straps that they use to bind lumber (looks like plumbers strap) buried in my yard where they obviously opened a new pack of lumber and just threw the strap into the dirt. I also find tons of pop cans and such that were consumed by the worker.

Under the conditions you listed, go for it. You have nothing to loose. You look like you are holding an XLT. If so dig everything but Iron,The nail, And pure aluminum, that is one little black mark just to the right of center on your scale. But if it reads as an alloy, several scattered black marks, dig it. Very few rings are pure, they are alloys, this includes platinum. GOOD LUCK !
