What is the trick to hunting railroad tracks? My town was once the hub for the northwest & on my side of town there were 10 sets of tracks. Now there is only 1 set. But when I go there is a ton of garbage & these weird chunks of metal. Lead maybe? Anyway any advice would be great.

More than likely them weird chunks of metal are iron pellets. Back in the day when we were a manufacturing steel country they used them pellets in the process. They are normally rounded and made excellent sling shot ammo! But I would think the best way to avoid the TONS of iron would be to discriminate all iron in this area. Otherwise you'll drive yourself nuts! JMHO! Or pick and dig them up for recycling and profit, if there is any!

I am descriminating iron but this is coming up as silver & is not rusty.

You know, your right they were never rusty! Come to think of it I never seen them with any kind of rust. Maybe they are ore pellets? Grayish black in color?

After doing search I found this, Taconite pellets. Apparently they are made with iron but don't rust. They were used in the steel making process and other things in the railroad industry.

Well that's no good. Because that shows up even though iron is descriminated. I don't know what s to do.

Iron has all kinds of things mixed in to form different types steel. Like nickle to form stainless, or vanadium to add strength. That is why some steel gets by the notch. Your best bet is to notch it out using the pellets if your detector can do that. Frank...111-1 profilecracked.webp

Hey thanks, I will try that.

Try any feilds around the rr bridges. The men working on the brige would sometimes setup camps nearby
