Relic Hunting
Been a while since I’ve made a post here mainly bc haven’t found a whole lot worthy of posting. I’ve been hunting what I believed to be a nice colonial site a couple of miles from the house now for about 2 months and out of all the flat buttons and shoe buckle parts that I have found no coins or tokens have come out until now, I can finally put somewhat of a date on this site now. I went out last Sunday before after a good hard rain and walked a cotton row that I’m sure I’ve went down before and dug 2 flat buttons back to back, bent over to pick up some old black glass and then hit a nice 77 VDI on the T2 normally a 77 is a bullet every time and as much as I love digging Civil War relics, digging colonial relics is right up there next to CW.

When I opened the hole the signal got louder so I just figured can slaw as usual, when I got down to around 11" I knew it wasn’t can slaw the next shovel load out fell a large black copper disc, at first thought I was thinking large cent size was right but it had sand imbedded in and on it so I just dropped it in my pocket and kept hunting. When the day was over and I got back to the truck and washed it off with some water and still couldn’t make out anything on, I compared it to a modern quarter to see if there was a size difference and it was slightly larger than a Washington quarter.

I got home and gave it a peroxide bath still sand stuck on it so I dropped it in some olive oil and left it until tonight. I just got it about 20 min ago and the olive did an outstanding job removed all the sand and corrosion and revealed a crown and a harp, I had no idea what it was so I started looking and sent it to a friend that is big into colonial coins/coppers. We both have come to the conclusion that it is a 1795 Georgeivs Washington North Wales Half Penny, it is coinage but more or less a token used locally in Wales. The spot this token came from was off a main colonial travel route so it being there doesn’t surprise me that much, Redbook says the coin in AG is worth $1250 mine is a little worse than AG but I am still considering sending it to PCGS for a Authentication Cert. Below is a pic of mine front and back and then front and back, You can only see it through a loop but under the harp are 4 stars, the front is completely gone with only some letters remaining.

Thanks for looking and keep on swinging

nice early copper! :headbang:
looks like an irish george II from here.
could the four stars be the numbers of the date instead?

Iron I know you have been around for a long time (but you look young for being around that long) :laughing7:, and I know you know your early coppers very well and much more than I but I have dug George Coins and this aint one. There is no date under the harp, there are 4 little roosette looking stars down there but no date. I may be very wrong as I have been before many times but Im willing to put money on it that its later 1790's, and not a George.

I would have to agree with Ironpatch on the Irish copper, the lettering that is visible doesn't seem to match the North Wales. The "S" that is visible to the left is too close to the bust. I guess if you are confident, get it authenticated.

First of all, the head is facing right not left. There are 2(II)'s just to the right of the head. There is a letter on the bottom left, at 7 o'clock, on the reverse. All of these observations, completely discount it from being a North Wales 1/2 penny. It is a KG II. Hogge

Correction...... "Counterfeit KG-III Irish 1/2 penny".

Sorry, it is not a North Wales token, wish it was, but it is a counterfeit KGIII Irish HP, the partial 8 is showing for the date and a dot after what looks like the remains of A, 178x, most likely it is a 1781, just about the most common year for the counterfeited.

How much money you got? ;D

Either way it is an interesting find. Congrats.

I don't know much about early coppers but if I was a betting man I would definately side with IP, Hogge and Don. So much knowledge there and all pointing to the same conclusion.
