Rare dime sells for nearly $2M at auction in Tampa

The 1894-S dime was struck at the San Francisco Mint. Only 24 were made, and only nine likely still exist.

$10,000 reward to just have someone show one of the others to be examined. What a dime!

The superintendent of the mint kept 3 and gave the rest away as gifts (bankers, most likely). He gave the three to his daughter telling her to save them until she was old. She spent one on a dish of ice cream and sold the other 2 in the 1950's. That was one expensive dish of ice cream.
