Not many people know the story behind the Maid of the Mist, Niagara Falls and even fewer people make the connection to proof that Iroquoian tribes participated in ritual human sacrifice at the sacred waters site. But oral and written history contains more than one eye witness account of 15 yr old native American girls being sacrificed by being sent over the waterfalls in a white canoe as late at 1846. This 1905 Maid of the Mist postcard is a collectible reminder of the human sacrifice.

The offering brought prosperity for the tribe and eternal happiness for the young person in the next life. The Hornblower 'Maid of the Mist' tour in Niagara Falls is the evolution of previous nautical tours - and this is just one more way the Niagara Falls experience has grown-up a bit over the years as the location has evolved into a more sophisticated tourist destination. You wont see this post card on the shelves anywhere in the shops either.. the place is way to sanitized for that now

15 years old? Shouldn't the boat be called MAIDEN of the mist?
