I’ve been going through some of my “treasures”, stored in totes, from decades ago. The note with it said , found in abandoned house southwest of town. Not found with detector: visual find. Somewhere I’ve got dozens more of these church keys, from various brands and styles. I was told that at one time you got a free opener with each case of Drewry’s. This was pre -aluminum can days and you had to puncture your own holes: one to drink from and one for displacement air. Thought I’d share.

Back in the day we called them 'church keys'--for some reason that today escapes me.
Don.......
PS: Apparently, here's the answer:
Bottles, especially beer bottles, were once opened with heavy, cast iron openers that resembled the same type of key used to open church doors in Europe. The name stuck even for today’s modern openers.

I always thought it was because they’d open anything and churches were never locked, back in the day. But I’m sure there’s a better answer.

Sorry for posting the same basic info after you posted it. Must be some lag time, I hadn’t seen yours yet.
