Re: Victorian Gold ring + crotal bell

I managed to get out for a couple of hours this afternoon on the new field. The finds are good but still only one hammered from this field so far. I haven't had time to clean and take pics of everything, but I did photo my star find for today, a Victorian wedding band, 5.3 grams 18ct. Thanks to Silver Searcher for identifying the year mark 1894. I also found my best crotal bell today and will post picture of that along with everything else tomorrow.

Re: Victorian Gold ring + crotal bell

Congrats to you on the gold wedding band Ian! :notworthy:

Does that crotal bell have the owners or makers initials (W.G.) scratched in the base . . .
or are my eyes playing tricks on me again?! :icon_scratch:

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave, the makers initials stand for William Gwynn 1770-1813. Have a look at the attached link for a lot of info on crotal bells :icon_thumleft:

Very cool link Ian, I've saved it to my favourites!

I've only found 3 or 4 complete bells, but this is the first one to show a makers mark. It still rings :icon_thumleft:

Thanks Red :icon_thumleft:, trouble is I didn't have my glasses on when I started digging. I saw the gold glint, but I thought it was a beer bottle cap at first, otherwise I would have taken an insitu photo :tongue3:. I found loads more today but I haven't had a chance to clean it all yet, but the ring is king so far :laughing7:
