Was searching around a old home site that dates to the 1850's today, there is a old outdoor chimney type thing way out back near the woods, well I was searching around it and noticed there was a cavity in the furnace thingy, reached in and felt something cold, went to grab it but I could'nt really lift it with one hand, so I had remove a few old bricks, to get them out.
Biggest damn bullets I have ever seen, the big one must weigh 50 pounds, and the little one maybe 35 pounds, the smaller of the 2 has, it looks like brass rifling.
I do not have a camera, so I will do the best I can with my crappy phone.

Any ideas on them bullets, I would really appreciate it, I cannot find anything close to them.

I would get someone to come to you and check those out. I once rode around in a Geo Metro for two hours with a Civil War Parrot Shell that was weeping, and a Cannonball with the fuse still in it...yeah let's just say my pucker factor was WAY up there with every bump we hit!!! Get them checked out and don't risk it all like we did. Not a good idea!

Well No Boom thankfully lol, I talked to a couple people today and they think the little one is inert, but that big one is high explosive round, and he looked at it and then told me to ( gently ) take it outside, I'm like them things have been bouncing around my trunk all day, not a good idea I guess, at least that's what I got from the look on his face.
Of course he said certain people would pay big bucks for them, to reload their shell cases, I did not know people could own that kind of weaponry, he said they can't, but that does not stop them lol.
I'll update this as I find out more.

People do collect them, and load them into empty cases for display, but they generally disarm them first (at least I hope they do). Problem is, you cant ship them if they aren't rendered safe for obvious reasons. If the 90mm is live and you can't find a collector locally to come pick it up, you might be better off to cut your losses and call the bomb squad, or chuck it in a deep lake.

Well I think I will go on a adventure today, was thinking I will go to the local state police post, and say something along the lines of, Hey I have a bomb in my trunk, can you guys disarm it ? Lol, yes I'm serious, that ought to make for an interesting adventure today.

State Police will blow them in place so you best pick that call carefully. I have seen them rope off a neighborhood reacting to obviously inert practice grenades. They find stuff like that all the time... usually after an old timer dies and the family starts clearing out his possessions. Regardless, they DON'T mess around when they hear about even a possibility. Sometimes I think they do it just for practice. Please... stop messing with them... especially transporting them. You are asking for trouble and more.

I do not see anything good coming from the LEO option (unless it is illegal of course).........best to find somebody who knows for sure what the status is.......
You should not work on any explosives if you are not aware and trained.......
The fuses on both seem expended/fired......fuses should have inert metal into inert metal.......so removing them should be safe......however, not knowing what, if any explosives were inside, a risk is that over time, some older explosives will degrade into unstable explosive components which can be shock sensitive.....hence the concern about bouncing around in your vehicle.....

To place them in a safe place and find somebody who can figure out what they are exactly would be my approach.......

I'm not sure I'd want to try that. A 90mm shell has a huge blast radius, and I personally wouldn't want to be within a quarter mile of one going off.

Well I am going to do something, what most would probably think is insane with the big one, going to a buddys farm this weekend, we are going to go out into the middle of a field...huge one..we are going to rig up a cutting torch and then light it, and then pull up along side of said drum, and I am going to put it on the drum in the flame and then we are gonna get the hell out of there, now of course that may result in a blown up BC.
I am guessing just a puddle of melted steel...or one helluva youtube video.

Mike

At the risk of continuing this thread, I'm gonna ask you a question.

What if, (and I do not care how remote the thought may be), you are successful in getting it to explode for your own jollies or for the world's youtube pleasures. When it does, it is a LOT larger than expected. In the process, it picks up and throws a rather large rock more than 2 miles. That rock crashes through a house's window and kills a sleeping infant.

Would you still enjoy playing with something this dangerous? Would you be able to forget that it happened?
Would you be able to enjoy the rest of your life, knowing what your playing did?

I couldn't.

That's all I'm going to say. If it's a ludicrous thought, or not, think!

Famous last words.

the big one at its widest is just slightly bigger than 3 1/2 inches, is the bottom scale on a tape measure millimeters ? in that size its exactly 9
Gah I dont remember how to read a tape lol /cry
the little one has something, numbers or letters stamped on the bottom, and a diamond shaped stamp, really rough surface.

They look to be some of the first howitzer shells highly volatile extremely dangerous your safe does not stand a chance of containing them if they blow you need to keep them in a climate controlled environment also try to keep them under 90 degrees farenhite no hotter I am a former Marine corp ordinance non commissioned officer I have seen bad things happen with old ordinance

So I have a few questions, if I take it to the state police, will I get into trouble ?, will they be able to tell if it is infact live, or will they just destroy it ? Because I like it and would like to keep it.
And thanks for making me think about what may have happened if I had tried to torch it.
