Hello fellow hunters...today I dug up this odd item. The head of it has a bottlecap design, and seems to be a stake of some kind. The head of it is imprinted with a big "G". I don't even have a guess on this one. I'm going to take it out in the hallway and clean it up with a toothbrush shortly. Any thoughts or guesses would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

It looks like, for lack of a better word, a section marker. Sometimes they are metal and sometimes they are stone. Used to mark sections of grass (cemetaries, concert lawns, etc) so that you know where you are or where to look for something. Again, just a guess and I hope it helps.

Interesting...I dug it at the site of a 1700's meetinghouse, so that could be.

Here is the head of the stake/thing cleaned up a bit...this is a lengthy cleaning process, so I'm going to do it in parts.

I am an old headstone cutter and yes it definitely is a corner marker for a family plot hence the "G" there would be 4 of these outlining the family plot consisting of usually 4-12 graves, corner markers were also made of granite matching the headstone, numerical plot markers were used to plot the entire cemetery. there should be 3 more of these where you found it. the lot lines always ran true north to south and east to west.

Oh no...this is not good. I dug it at the site of a marked 1700's Meetinghouse (there is a plaque noting this), and this marker was on it's side, about 5 inches down under some wood chips, RIGHT in front of the "you are here" trail sign. It was actually very easy to get up, took me 5 minutes between signal and excavation. Did I discover an unknown burial area?? I hope the spirits are not offended.

Dont sweat it, I doubt it is an existing cemetery, if you can post a pic of the site I should be able to give you an idea of what the story is though. I have many years of experience regarding old cemeteries.
