Welcome to the F.E. club! Don't fret the date!
You only have three choices and the first one don't count. (mostly) ;)

Nice!

soak in olive oil fer a few days,,,,,welcome to the FE club

You're bummed? I have never found one!

I did a cart wheel lol. Hey nsdq what kind of olive oil? Extra virgin?

Don't know if I'd recommend ANY cleaning on this coin. Not worried about intrinsic value. The thing is, when they get this corroded, there's a better than average chance that the details that can still be seen might be lost too. At least, right now, you can tell what it is, if you clean, it might just become one more copper slug.

Up to the OP of course, but, some coins just do not lend themselves to improvement.

In that condition the value is minimal, if your want the date, you could use nickelene to bring the date out. It is often used on no date buffalo nickels.....Joe McDonough

Yep, it might. But, I just don't see why. 1857 or 1858. Why chance it? Wind up with a slug and be able to put it in a frame and tell friends later on, "It's a Flying Eagle Cent!! Trust me!!!" ;)

You have 3 date options...1856, 1857 & 1858

Most likely the latter 2 is what you have...(if by chance your coin is dated 1856, you have an extremely rare coin)
1856............2,000 minted (Given to Congressmen/Legislators)
1857 17,450,000
1858 24,600,000

Either way I think the FE Cent is one of the better coins to be found...oops, er, best designed

In my opinion, its worth a chance to use olive oil...

(just don't add vinegar) :laughing7:

I agree. With the short lived series, soak it in olive oil for a week or so. You may be able to get at least one of the third or fourth digits that can nail the year for you.

It is an 1858 I can see the bottom of the last eight there's just a shadow but it's there

Does anyone else see it?

Now I think I can see the whole 8

Definitely don't clean it and congratulations by the way you will find others that are worse and some that are better you can definitely see the eagle easily that's about the most you can realistically ask for

Right. Can't be a 7. Oh wait - the bottom of a SIX looks just like the bottom of an EIGHT!!!! Now go to sleep. If you cannnnnnnnnnnn . . .

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED !! YOU SHOULD HAVE NO TROUBLE VEIWING WITH A LITTLE CLEANING .

Congrats on the flying eagle,I've found that if you can't see a date with a little cleaning a lot of cleaning never helps,I've still yet to find one..WTG!

Take a nice smooth piece of aluminum foil, place over the coin and make a rubbing, it often shows more detail than you can see on the coin.

Olive oil will darken corroded surfaces considerably. It would be a shame to loose the little detail you still have so choose your next move carefully. Nice find
