Recommended Deus II Settings

I've mainly used my Deus II for relic hunting where I'm digging everything. But I now have an opportunity to detect an old city trash dump that is littered with old cans (many with lead seals), bottle caps, pull tabs and lots of iron. There are valuables in amongst it though....a friend dug and screened there over a summer and found over 50 silver coins (including a Peace dollar), many trade tokens and 13 gold rings.

My request is for recommended settings to detect this area. I know I'll have to dig junk, but I don't want to dig thousands of bottle caps and cans in the process. Would one of the factory settings with some notching work for this?

Perhaps a Deus II program could be customized. I've seen the Manticore and an Equinox 900 customized to hit only coins during park detecting. It was done by detecting various coins, noting the response number, and then notching everything else out. I suspect one would lose some desirable targets. I also have a Deus II and need to search an area of extreme trash from about 1900, when trash was simply tossed out back. I will try to scan some coins and see if the notching approach might work. I doubt highly conductive things like a can could eliminated.

John Oliver did a Deus II for Dummies book in Pdf that has several of his programs that may prove useful. Sorry to say the link is at another detecting forum. I have used the SNIPER program, and it does work well. There is a TRASHY program that may work for you. I haven't used it though.

I have found that a 1943 penny is a very hard coin to find. During the ww2 times they made that penny with more steel in the penny. To find this coin i have to lower my discrimination down to zero. Anyone else have this problem ?

Good post! Yes, the XP Deus II is still very good right out of the box in the stock settings. I always recommend learning it exactly like that before adjusting anything.
