Hey folks :) I have a few questions on the Deus II:

1) If im hunting an extremely trashy site - when I try and ground balance, im often times ground balancing over trash (its impossible not to at some of my sites) Does that affect the ground balance?
a) Does it help to turn down the Sensitivity to ground balance at trashy sites?

2) When noise cancelling, i've read in some books (Andy S.) you do it with the coil in the ground, since thats where the coil will be when detecting - not the air. Is this true with the Deus II? Or do you it at waist height, pointed at the closest source of EMI?

3) Does it matter which you do first, ground balancing or noise cancelling?

4) If im hunting an old, trashy site just for older US coins, and dont want to miss deep nickels - what max frequency would you suggest? 24 or 40 khz? (with some moderate deeper iron, mixed in with modern trash)

5) Im returning to using my Deus II after a 2+ year layoff. Im using the standard headphones that came with the unit - which program version do you recommend using? (Im currently on .71 lol)

Thanks in advance :)

If you are not experiencing emi I really don't see a need to noise cancel.

On ground balancing an trashy sites....well I would try and ground balance it on the outer perimeter on the site itself before you get to the high trash area if possible.

Odds are on trashy areas you are not really going to get much very deep anyway...with that said you really do not need to run a high sensitivity at all on a trashy area.

Sometimes single frequency runs much better on trashy sites....it will false less using a single frequency.

When you mention trashy sites is it iron infested or aluminum can slaw?

If it is iron I do run 40khz in highest multi or in single frequency

I used to use the same version of software as you do. I think that was the first version that had the large target ID numbers

I now am trying the new stereo feature on my second Deus 2....it is like 4.1 or something

I took and traded in my first Deus 2 for a minelab.....big mistake that was.

Anyways I have gotten another and I cannot speak which version of the firmware you might like better. There have been several versions....maybe someone else will chime in.

I don't know if I helped you or not but maybe there is something here you can put to use.

Good luck. Tim

This particular site has been in use since the early 1900's. It seems to have alot of deep iron signals, as well as modern pull tabs, can slaw, etc. I have found alot of good coins here with other detectors, but the grounds literally has about 2-3 signals per full sweep left to right (and thats with everything notched to cherry pick coin signals only). The deep iron hits in the 90+ from all 4 directions, sounds tight/round, and is almost every time the head of a large nail.

I now am trying the new stereo feature on my second Deus 2....it is like 4.1 or something
Do the later versions require you to use the new stereo headphones? Im using the clip-behind-the-ears puck version that came with the detector.

Sounds like a great place to detect to me!!

It probably would benefit you to dig every non ferrous signal there at that site once you get your cherry picking tones out first. Then start digging all of the pull tab type signals next. No telling what goodies are being masked by all of that stuff . I would also try different frequencies too.

I wouldn't really even worry about ground balancing there actually. The Brits who search farmland hardly ever ground balance in the UK.

Yes your Deus 2 remote can be updated to the 4.2 firmware but you would have to invest in a set of WSA ST backphones. They run about $150.00

i just ordered a new pair of them and I had to update them to 4.2 firmware out of the box brand new?? Come on XP!! Plus the battery was D.O.A. out of the box brand new too!!

Also it took a few times before the firmware actually downloaded and worked.

You have to use specific web browsers too... Mozilla which I prefer is not XP firmware friendly.

I have not had the time to really try them out or test them. I have only messed with seeing how it sounds by swinging a penny across the coil in the different 4 modes

So far all I can say is this...this is something you won't be able to tell if you like it or not right off the bat. I am going to have to play with this a bit.

I am going to hold on to my WS6 backphones for sure though.

My go to places are exactly what you describe, iron infested sites. Mostly farm field were homesteads used to sit at one time.
I never ground balance and have had no problem picking out the noble targets out of the iron.

Though even with the Deus processor being really fast I tend to swing really slower in the iron and I have realized that the amount of targets I get increase.

The square nail issue can be limited to a few things. Run a similar(custom) program but with the X/Y screen, and when you get that ??? signal and can't decide if it's the nail or not just switch to that screen and it nails it.

I run Gary Blackwell's Tekkna program with a few minor tweaks like the reactivity depending on soil and the amount of targets per sweep I might lower it to 1 even. Remember the high the number the decrease in depth-but faster the processor will separate the targets.

So basically if you did a second count a full swing in the lower reactivity settings under 3 it would be 4-5 seconds (12-3 o'clock & back again) over lap the coil 30-50%.

Basically the target has sat there waiting for me to dig it up for a few hundred years-so what the rush?

Your first statement above.
Watch this video.
Neither model is making sound. Suggesting emi preset.
With. Deus 2 with 9” FMF coil sweeping Nickel. Big difference when Deus 2 is conflicted with Manticore.

And what version are you running please?
If you are running some of the later versions.
Your detector noise canceled at turn on.
Believe it started with version 3.0 and later.
And if user has freq scan set to manual under the options key menu,
Detector running later versions will still do a noise cancel at turn on - all coils. It will automatically do noise cancel in whatever freq band is selected at turn on.
Some folks may not know this.
Cheers.
So depending on what version you were using, you may have give bad info, as far as the detector not being noise canceled doing your checks of the targets.

PS
I have never stated I am the only with camera and YouTube access.
What I have said is I have shown some things detector model related seems few other folks show and maybe even know or realize.

You never stated what version you were using either. I am using 4.2 version now trying to see if I like the new stereo feature or not as you would have saw in my first reply.

Regardless of what version you use my video will speak for itself in areas not affected or prone to EMI.

You do a lot of videos that "could" benefit users in particular emi environments.
I myself have watched several of them.

I state my option from in field use by me on places I have detected. Yes I have detected in areas with emi that I had to do a noise cancel. Not every site is affected by emi and that was the reason I stated what I did in response to the question the OP asked.

I am NO "expert" on the XP Deus 2 but I know how to use one a good enough for my style of detecting and I try to offer advice or opinions to help them out. Everyone has different ground conditions and emi to deal with and my video speaks for itself.

Cheers

No I didn’t state which version I was using.
What I showed was just because the detector is quiet doesn’t mean it’s not conflicted or being affected negativity by emi.
And the audio yielded in video showed this exactly.
Will user see this in the ground? They can.
User of Deus 2 saw this just last week I believe hunting with a manticore runner.
And the reason why I did the videos I did on the subject.
You see I don’t know what others know.
And I don’t charge for my info. And I don’t make 1 penny off of your tube.
Yeah, those elevated tests. They show some things. And these things can carry over to in ground targets.
Which I have tested both buried targets and using the equipment in the wild detecting targets doing settings, freq change and using other models in proximity of the other models.

My information is free too.

My original statement above was this

"If you are not experiencing emi I really don't see a need to noise cancel."

I NEVER stated that noise cancel is not ever needed or recommended.

You stated this in your own words

"You see I don’t know what others know." And you are exactly correct by your statement.

You don't know what others know or have experience in but you are quick to try to prove someone who may be correct wrong.

I am quite aware of "Silent EMI" before anyone made a video of the concern due to the proximity of metal detectors near one another while out searching.

I never stated you were wrong however, you stated in your video that I was wrong in my above response.

My video proves itself in areas NOT affected by other metal detectors, cell phones, WI-FI and EMI

Your video proves itself in areas where all of the above may be present.

Thank you for your continued support on the subject!!

I appreciate it very much!

Cheers!!

Yeah
Your detector noise canceled at turn on.
You stated I don’t have to do noise cancel. Oh the targets sound good. You never mentioned the detector actually did a noise cancel at turn on.
If it wouldn’t have been done results gotten may have been different. Key word MAY.
Why did you do the video? Exactly.
To prove you don’t have to noise cancel the detector?
Or it’s quiet running so forget about noise canceling?
Or to try to poke fun about my elevated testing?

Those elevated tests.
Smart money says they show stuff. Stuff gotten via shortcut to teach folks, even myself.

So if your Deus 2 did a noise cancel on start up then why were you experiencing silent EMI?

Was it because you introduced the EMI by turning on your other detector after you turned on your Deus 2?

Probably so even though you didn't mention it.

Either way all places do not have EMI.

If the original poster of this thread wants to or not he can decide if he needs to do a noise cancel or not on the site he is detecting by how his machine is acting.

Thank you for your support

I will add this as well.

For over 50 years metal detectors operated on single frequency without a noise cancel option and everyone had fun.

Thank you!

My Deus 2 with 4.2 firmware is and was set to manual frequency scan on start up.

I looked at the newest version of XP Deus 2 manual and downloaded it today and it states that on start up it will do an automatic scan and there is also a 2 second delay.

So yes you are correct if the detector is configured to do an automatic frequency scan during start up and with switching in between programs it will do an automatic frequency scan if set to do so.

Mine was not set up to do that when I made the video.

It may have been set up from the factory to do that but I just bought this one from Richard at Backwoods a few weeks ago and he did the firmware update before he sent it to me.

He may have made the change himself if it is configured to come that way from XP.

I do not know.

Also tnsharpshooter, you got me to looking around with settings today that I normally would not even bothered looking into!!

Thank you!!

I have a site that is very similar, my wife hunts it with the Deus 2 every weekend and we hardly ever ground balance. I use the WS6 Master and do ground balance most of the time. There really doesn't seem to be much difference between balanced and not balanced. I've been seeing very old iron (hand wrought) ringing in the 90+ range although only 1 or 2 directions. Newer iron in my case, anyway, doesn't ring that high.

When I need to do a noise cancel, I hold the detector just above the ground.

You can upgrade to the newest firmware without having the stereo headphones. You'll just miss out on a couple new features. My wife is still using the old headphones on version 4.1 We can swap headphones if she wants to use the stereo headphones from time to time.

We run our detectors wide open most of the time, rather than notching, to hear all the iron. But we're looking for the large old iron. In an area like yours, I would swing low and slow. Listen for the high chirps between iron (sharp and crisp). Then turn at least one direction and see if it repeats (you can keep turning 360 for more verification). I would dig any target that give me a sharp/crisp high tone from all directions.

Older versions with auto freq scan in manual.
Detector would not do a scan.
Would default to channel 3 all MF bands.
If you selected auto freq scan on, then the detector would do auto scan at turn on, when changing programs to include saved programs and I believe when changing freq bands within a program even.
Same with single freq.
Starting with V3.0 and later.
No matter how auto freq scan is set.
At turn on detector will do one noise cancel. That’s all while using detector, unless you have auto freq scan set to auto.
Folks need to know this.
Why?
Because ID of coins can change depending on freq shift selected.
Some coins more than others. Nickle ID can change as much as 3-4 points comparing lowest freq shift to highest freq shift- this can vary little bit too depending on actual MF band used.
Select diggers could be fooled. Not knowing this.
Some folks have commented in few of the videos I did showing this. Some had been using the detector for years and didn’t know this.
So there is an EMI thingy, and there is a chance of ID thingy change per target - I.e. coins to be mindful of.
Using versions 3.0 and later.
Default freq shift in all MF bands where noise cancel hasn’t been done is channel 0. Previous versions was channel 3 freq shift for default.

Yes frequency change can and does affect target ID. If one is dead set on digging specific coin numbers this can throw them off.

Also good targets next to iron and or other non ferrous targets will also bring down a normal coin number ID

My advice is to dig it all.
