I read that the Red Belly is basically a southern species that has been slowly expanding their range northward. If they are in MA, I guess they made it about all the way north. Gary

Most people love woodpeckers ... when they aren't attacking their gutters or transformers in the spring.

I wonder why they are called "red belly" though since they don't seem to have a red one?

(Both seem to be males since the red goes over the top of the head to the beak.)

Younger ones,older ones have a belly this color.

I only see one kind of woodpecker around here called the downy woodpecker and they always move around so I can't get a good picture

Nice pic! i had not noticed before - but it appears this one closes his eyes when pecking? I wonder if they all do that to protect their eyes from the wood shrapnel.

If you get one or more in your garage, they can make a mess of dry 2x4s pretty quickly!
