Relic theft at Lewis and Clark NP

*&^%*& dirtbags.

Hopefully they find these dirtbags and throw every charge imaginable at them.

I agree, people like that make it difficult if not impossible for responsible folks to get permission on private land.

[FONT=Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]and how would they know " MANY " artifacts are now missing . maybe they dug can slaw and shotgun brass like we all do. Sure what was done is very wrong but I don't buy into the hype of the article .
I've seen holes dug at the chancellorsville and wilderness battlefield .
My freedom is worth more to me than the relics to be found.

News report states it was a posted archaeology site - x marked the spot

When "severe damage" and "metal detector" are used in the same sentence, it does nothing good for the hobby. Hopefully they get caught.

Couple of things :

1) This obviously has nothing to do with metal detecting. No md'r made a hole size and mess like that .

2) I have seen FIRST HAND where a sensitive monument spot raised and alarm and issued a "B.O.L" for md'rs, d/t they thought they saw evidence of md'rs . The evidence they pointed to was little wire marker flags that were spotted hither and yonder. And what appeared to be divot marks.

Later, after the B.O.L. was issued and spread around, it was discovered that it was the result of nothing more than boyscouts that were doing their geocaching exercises in the area.

POINT BEING: A lot times md'rs or "looters" get storied like this. When there is other explanations, that have nothing to do with md'ing or looting.

ok so x marks the spot . but how do the authorities know " MANY" relics were missing .
What should of been said is, holes were dug . maybe a boat load of relics were taken, maybe nothing but trash. how do they know any artifacts are missing at all.
it is nothing more than sensationalism of the story .

....
it is nothing more than sensationalism of the story .

Correct. And then well-meaning people link these type things here. Which sends all the newbies scurrying thinking "everyone hates us" and the "sky is falling" , etc...

I'd wager to say that the ONLY persons who take note of any such headline, is md'rs themselves. And some archies/park ranger types. Just as in how you don't even notice a headline about needle-point, or bird-watching, so too does the average Joe never register any article or headline of this nature.

Didn't quite read it well enough, but if they knew there were many artifacts buried there, why are they leaving them to rot away when all it took was nine holes?

shouldnt be digging for stuff on a listed archeological site, especially in a national park. How else do rangers and archeologists get nice collections??

I'm thinking this is "NEWS", without research.

Honestly, the pic in the article looks like hog damage....
