Re: relics Vs wheaties and silver "rosies"

It's all about "providence". I mean, take for example a British fellow reading about a 200 yr. old bust coin or button or whatever, found at the earliest site in your city. To him, a "200 yr. old item" would seem like new child's play, right? (because they're used to chasing 1000 to 2000 yr. old stuff where they're at). And likewise: if you read about their roman broaches, saxon gold, etc... "what good does that do you?" (unless you intend to fly over).

So it's the same for us USA hunters: a deeeeep barber or seated or sherrif's badge with a particular city or name on it, might bring BIG "atteboys" from guys in that particular state, or guys who have tried that particular park/school/beach, etc.... but you managed to bag that elusive thingie, while they must've missed it.

This is why state specific forums are so appropriate. The value and challenge of age-site-specific artifiacts vary from locale to locale. I could care less about CW buckles or buttons, while someone from S. Carolina would probably salivate at the chance of one-upping his buddies with such a find. Likewise they would probably yawn at the thought of seateds or busts found in CA (since they're after colonial coppers or whatever in their locales).

I don't understand how extremely common wheat pennys and newer silver coins can get more hits and excitment than historic American artifacts?

coloradocav, ssshhhhhh! Are you TRYING to ruin a good thing for those of us who hunt the "historic American artifacts"? If other people are perfectly happy finding wheaties etc. then let them be. Why would you want to turn their attention to what we are looking for?

If you have found something really good, you might want to keep your mouth shut. As for me, I've never really found any good stuff... but if I did, I'd keep pretty quiet. Just knowing you found something really good is all the "cheerleading" and praise you should need.

Now, I'm off to find the latest posting of whoever found a buffalo nickle and give them loads of encouragement..... :icon_thumright:

Re: relics Vs wheaties and silver "rosies"

Listen to Arizona Bob, Coloradocav! I'm interested in history and Coloradocav has made some killer finds in this area. He's also found his share of coins, probably more than many of us. Maybe you should start posting more pics of your coin finds, I don't know. Everyone has their own particular likes and interests, and there appears to be room for all of them here. Coloradocav also seems to be a better fisherman than me. Post your pics of your relics, bud. There's a lot of interest in those too.

Re: relics Vs wheaties and silver "rosies"

As you can see from numerous posts, some people get there rocks off when they find a solitary copper penny or silver coin...its like they have discovered a whole new world. And their post will go on and on describing their day from getting out of bed until they did their happy dance after finding a indescribable and heavily damaged penny...that is later identified as a rusty split-washer vintage 1980.

Then there are those that purposely hunt for relics, CW or otherwise, and are satisfied. They share their finds and respond to others.

Me, I prefer looking for gold and silver coins along desolate California coastal beaches or for relics...with a degree of success...Spending hours digging for pennies, to me, is boring and doesn't hold my attention for long.

Then there are those that entomb their finds in shadow boxes which become conversation pieces that may interest their guests....some quite ingenious

And then there are those that find some rust encrusted junky relic that may look like something Rover deposited on your frontyard or an nondescript piece of junk and post an ID inquiry...as if everyone has xray vision and can discern what is encased below the crud.

To each his own.

Re: relics Vs wheaties and silver "rosies"

I love finding relics and old coins, heck even new coins; especially if it wasn't my own to begin with. The way i see it, anything I find is more than I went out with ;D I do comment on both coins and relics in the forum when the story is interesting, but that's me.

Re: relics Vs wheaties and silver "rosies"

Ooops. I see that I wrote this phenomenom off to "providence". The correct word is "PROVENANCE" doh!

Like this: a particular bullet from the 1876 might be a dime a dozen, and simply discarded at most places, RIGHT? But what if that exact same type/size/shape/model/brand bullet was found at the exact place where Custer was known to have fallen, at the Custer's Last Stand battle site? So guess which bullet would elicit the "atteboys" and news-story: the 1876 type bullet found at some farm in Nevada, or that same bullet found at the spot Custer died? That's called "provenance".

And the same logic applies to the skill level, one-up-manship, etc... at all the places we all hunt. Like I'd much rather find that barber dime, from super deep, a faint signal I had to skill-fully interpret, at an old park that my friend claimed was worked out. You know, show that to them and wait for them to give that look of "hmmm, I guess I missed a few things  "

Re: relics Vs wheaties and silver "rosies"

I have posted nice relics and nice coins both. I rarely post on this forum anymore. From what I have observed people reply to their buddies posts more often than they reply to a great find. This is not wrong, it's just the way it is. People support their friends more than they recognize great finds. To get more replies to your posts become buddies with a lot of people on this forum. I still enjoy this forum from time to time but I prefer spending my time on other forums.

Re: relics Vs wheaties and silver "rosies"

Wow Coloradocav. You probably got more responses to this post then any of your others :laughing9: (no offense meant)

I've seen some items posted on this site that should have gotten more comments but didn't. Maybe the persons who saw it just didn't know what to say or maybe the people who do the most commenting just didn't see it.

But yes there are posts that in my opinion are not even worth ones time....like a rivet. I saw where one person found some special rivet that probably had 50 comments. Maybe I'm jealous :tongue3:

As a side note, I'm going to try to get my posting numbers up 1000 more by putting on every post , and nothing else.

Re: relics Vs wheaties and silver "rosies"

Stefan hit home with his first paragraph. I'm guilty of that. I'm tickled with any find, but I finally think 'fool, you spent about $1500 on this machine and you're dancin around about a penny. You could have spent that money on a gun, had money left over, and ROBBED detectorists and made out better in the long run.' But it's still fun. I like all the posts on here, find them interestin, and yeah right, to each his own.
