Relocation To Richmond VA

Calling all mid-east coast hunters for help. I'll be relocating to Richmond VA in January. As such I'm completely starting over as far as rock hunting goes, again. If anyone hunts in the area, or even within a couple hours of the area and could help me out with spots, areas, tips, etc that would be great. Also, if anyone has information on any local groups, clubs or show dates and times I'd really appreciate it.

Looking forward to posting my first VA find. While I'm losing a bunch of good spots locally I will be closer (~6 hrs instead of 9 hours) to some good hunting spots in WV and OH.

Good luck with your move and if you haven't thought about it, you might want to consider getting into metal detecting. Va. is rich in historic sites. And Richmond was right in the middle of Civil War action.

fyrffytr1 - I've thought about metal detecting. I'm sure I'll try to get into some but I don't own a detector and have never done it before so somewhile is going to have to show me the ropes.

1320 - If you're offering I accept. I learned to hunt rocks in western KY and would love to see what the rest of the state has to offer. I have a shovel, a screen and a lot of patience.

i dont know if your into fossils, but many of the streams in the Richmond area have lots of nice sharks teeth in them.

Lordpiney - thanks for the tip. I also collect fossils and am excited to find some sharks teeth. Can you provide any thoughts on how to find them? Do you just pick them out of gravel bars? Sift for them?

Oh, lucky you!!!!!!!!!!!!

Richmond (and in all direction from there) is RICH, rich, rich - in history and great things to find.

Richmond, and the "outskirts", like Ballsville, Tobaccoville, Midlothian, Powhatan, Falls Church (that's just in one direction), Petersburg in the other direction, Charlottsville (west) and areas in between - are all rich in metal detecting heaven.

There were marches all over the place, battles all over the place - and, its not hard to find them. If you go to the outskirts of Richmond (Richmond's outskirts have increased 50 fold since I lived there) - you can find old military cemeteries - and, around them - you can find lots of stuff (not in them - but, quite often, they buried their dead in the vicinity of where they died, so you can find good detecting areas outside the cemeteries.).

You can also find the old tobacco shanties, mostly fallen down - but, since they were taken over by soldiers quite often, you can find things - even without a metal detector.

Also, the area is mineralized (as in gold).

Chris - yes it was short, just under 3 years. I found some good people and good points though. I wish I would have found mroe Mississippian artifacts. Just about everything I found was Hopewell or Archaic.

TNMountains - I emailed Thirty7 a couple of times a few months back and he offered some tips and advice which I appreciate.

Mrs OroBlanco - Thank you for the map and the tips. I am in Richmond now and was house hunting this past weekend. I saw two different individuals metal detecting while I was out, one in the woods and one in a field. I have a lot to do to get moved so I didn't stop but once I get settled I'll plan on introducing myself. I don't currently own a metal detector but I'll have to pick one up shortly. Also I'd love to find even a little gold. I'll have to make to trips into the area you showed in the map.

Dang Joe sorry we didnt get to hunt more here in Mo. I get over to Richmond every now and then for metal detecting will look ya up next time im there, i got a few spots out there I will show ya. Careful with that metal detectin its just as addicting as pickin up points and Richmond area is the best place bar none for civil war relics! Enjoy.

I will do that. Lots of brokes and 2 more broken axes for me this fall. Up in Wi rite now with to much snow for walkin fields and to damn cold to brave the creeks up here. Goodluck in Va, I love it there.
