Today I found the sad remains of a denarius which in antiquity was counterfeited: bronze core with silver plate. It can be dated about 200 AD and was minted by the emperor Caracall for his mother, Julia Domna.
The other coin, at least I found a nice bronze, is a commemorative follis for the city of Rome, minted at Trier (GErmany) about 333/334 AD.

Excellent counterfiet :)

Are you sure the other is a follis size, looking at the 6 I have they are 15-17mm - AE3 - AE4

Hi Crusader, the official numismatic description of these small bronzes is follis, although this ancient name only can be related to the early large bronzes of the tetrarchy (late 3rd and early 4th century).

Nice coins Folkert. I envy you your hunting area and weather. Everything here is frozen solid. Here is some info. for you on "silvered Roman coins. Some people call the proccess "silver washing, but all it is, is a silver oxide rubbed on the bronze coin with a little water. The result is a nice silver "looking" coin. Silver oxide was obtained by removing the silver foam from the molten silver and when hardened, it was ground to a fine powder. A lot of the smaller, so-called silver coins of the Hapsburg Empire were silvered using this same proccess.

Great finds Folkert! I am having a hard time seeing the mint mark, should be at the lower legend of the last picture, does not look like the Trier PTR mint mark but maybe another mint mark? It was a dream to find a Roman coin with a Trier mint mark where I am working (70 kms from Trier) but I just do not see it happening, I have not found anything close to Roman and mostly junk and WWII finds. I will be glad to leave this area soon and get back to Bavaria. HH, Mike

Mike, I took SkiSpeed69 with me when we found that weapons stash, and not far from it, he got himself a Roman Grot (Bronze). Next time you´re up we´ll have a wander over that area again (It´s also where I got my Roman Silver from)
