I ran across this interesting account of Jacob Snively on an expedition up the Gila in 1859. Not the LAD per se, but perhaps some part of the later stories were derived from this expedition.

Unfortunately, the paper changed hands and became a political instrument of southern sympathies leading up to the Civil War...no further information about this expedition was published in this particular paper.
