Jim is famous for his flake over grind art. Every flake is perfect on that stuff. One day we were looking at a big pile of palmwood flakes. He picked one up and made a stunning catahoula abo style. He didnt like it because the the flakes were not perfectly matched. I loved the it. After that he made quite a few. I still have most.

Here are pics in somewhat random order. All but three are either East Tx palmwood or manning fused glass. One is opalized palmwood .

Those Black polka dot palmwood cat’s have always been my favorite. I appreciate the show Steve.

Imo this needs to be a sticky in the knapping sub forums.

I agree. This sub forum gets almost no traffic though. I guess I understand why it was moved here but I intended the thread to be about Jim, not rocks.

Mine too. Jim didnt really like them because they were just flaked instead of fogged. I finally got him to understand after auctioning a few. I forget who bought those.

I believe Jim spent some time with Bobby Allen while visiting in Texas. Bobby may have bid on some in those auctions.

He may have. I still have 50 or so of them. He kept several for his frame that he left to his daughter.

You know, I remember a post on Arrowheadology where Jim was talking about his daughter and how she appreciated his knapping skills. To paraphrase, he said she would "cherry pick" his work before it went on the market! :laughing7:

I'll see if this old Email address I have will work for Susan and tell her but I don't have one for Bobby.

Edit: Just sent Email to Susan.

RIP Jim... I never got to meet him in person, but exchanged lots of messages and points over the years with him.

I mean no disrespect from this, but if you saw him you'd never expect the perfection that came from his hands. An old, scruffy, chain smoker, wearing a ball cap and old clothes, driving a old van that probably never had better days, but he was da Vinci/Beethoven/Mozart with high grade agate & jasper and an all around nice guy.

Perfect description. He was the most gentle and generous soul I ever met too. Jim got me started back playing pool. I'm actually on the the board of a private billiards club now. Not long ago, Jim mailed me his custom built pool cue. I told him I would put it up for display as jim was quite a favorite over there. He didn't like that. He wanted someone to get use from it . I keep it at the club and five or six members use it often. He would like that .
