A few years ago I found a site where military uniforms were disposed of by burning...or that is my assumption. At the time I found over 150 WWI,WWII and a few Victorian Canadian military buttons from all of the different branches. I went back today and found another smaller burn site and added to the button total. This smaller burn looks like where maybe the webbing and belts were burned due to the abundance of brass belt buckles, smaller buckles, strap ends, grommets and snaps. The site will bear some more exploration and perhaps a good sifting.

Where that happens over here, it's because the uniforms were used to condition the soil. The rag trade saw many uniforms burnt/shredded on the fields in my area, as it's heavy clay.
