Found this on the route of General Sullivan's march through Pennsylvania as he was driving the Iroquois up to Canada after the Wyoming Massacre. It came out of one of his camps. Finds were few and far in between, It is cleaning up now. Should look nice. Also got some other items, but they only had overnight camps, so it's a tough hunt! Gotta feed my birds, I'll try fixing it later or getting it cleaned with a better picture.

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

It's coming along nicely. I will not get it done today, I have some (sort of) major surgery tomorrow. Maybe by the end of the week or early next week (some of us are tough and ornery.) PLUS it requires no lifting.

IT"S DONE. I got bored. Pics to follow, it's still cooling.

Good luck with that Smokey, I pray the best for you. You're good people and that counts.

Nice work on the stirrup. Good luck with the surgery. Take care.

I expect to get back on here Tuesday am whining like all get out!

Now I have found like 3 stirrups just like that from 1800s site. Not trying to dis or naysay, but how are you determining it's from the war? Has there been no other activity on site since then?

Here it is! Absolutely Revolutionary War and most likely used by an officer. View attachment 1723497View attachment 1723498View attachment 1723499 Just like in the reference books! I am very, very happy with it. THIS is why I dig some iron! These things can go for well over $100 sometimes $200 or more, and this one has a great provenance with it. Notice the twist in the center bar of the bottom piece. It is not out of focus. It was twisted for a fancier design when made. I as a rule don't sell stuff I find, so I'll have it almost forever. I like digging the history and give a rat's rear about modern coins! It's the history. View attachment 1723500 Now this second little thing was found right next to the stirrup in the same hole, I believe it is an attempted field repair for the swivel that was on the top of the stirrup. View attachment 1723501 If you know what this third relatively light weight thing is, let me know. I'm thinking DSCN0394.webpDSCN0395.webpDSCN0396.webpDSCN0399.webpDSCN0400.webpn itself. Look at the side view especially and notice how shabbily it was made. It was 200' from the stirrup. I also think its Rev War. What a fun place! They also allow digging, trouble is, where to dig? Too much land, too little time. I'll get to post the American Indian artifacts soon.

Links aren't working for me...:dontknow:

There was no town there until about 1849 or so. The site has either brand new beer cans on it and .22 bullets, or Revolutionary War items. There weren't any houses or anything for miles around.

very cool find! hope it cleans up nice!

Cool just curious how you had come to that conclusion thanks for the clarification

Collecting since was 8 years old, thousand of dollars of research papers and books and the local history books as well as the Revolutionary war accounts.

No detecting for me this week. Had major surgery yesterday and no bungee jumping, roller blading, detecting, nothing fun for awhile.

Killer relic and great restoration, congrats! :occasion14:

I used "Iron Out" on it for 48 hours, then took it out and manually cleaned it with a stout hand file.

Epic history. Epic.

Wow cool find youve earned all those relics hands down. Glad all went well youll be bouncing around better than new in no time my good friend. Tommy

I don't think that the second piece is an attempt to replace the small oval swivel loop that would have been at the top. That swivel piece as I recall from my copy of the Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution is more like the size of an oval knee buckle. I agree that it is probably an officers stirrup since the enlisted men wouldn't have been on horseback. I don't recall if Sullivan had Dragoons with him though.

Edit: I may not be seeing the second pic that you refer to because a lot of your images didn't load.
