That buttplate, being brass with a shoulder-curve and wide tang and only two screws, appears to be a Model-1841 Springfield "Mississippi Rifle" variant, lacking a patchbox notch.

Thanks CBG, however I'm still a little lost. Are you saying there is a variety 1841 Mississippi rifle with a shoulder-curve and no patchbox notch? Is it the Cadet variety?

Just for what its worth, here is Mississippi rifle butt plate I found in the same area (about 10 feet away) with the notch.
