Since I started MD'ing in the spring I have mainly been trying in local parks and schools and have done pretty good on clad. Even found 2 silver rings and small gold ring, but I have yet to find a single silver coin.
My latest searches have concentrated a local town's (founded in the mid 1800's) main through street as they are ripping it up including sidewalks (which are pretty much gone already) and have the whole street pretty much blocked off to traffic.
Of all the various searches I have done, this one feels like it should have silver coins somewhere, but so far they have eluded me.
The first time I tried I pulled up 2 wheat pennies, a 1946 nickel, and a 1895 V nickel (at about 1 inch) as well as some clad. The 1895 is my first "old" coin. (Oldest prior coin were a couple of 1950's wheat pennies).
The second time I got a beat up silver ring, some clad and a button.
The third time, this past Saturday, I tried again from the other end and found some clad, 4 wheat pennies, a nickel from 1940 (on the surface but you could tell it had been underground for some time), some clad, a waterbury button with an Anchor on it, and a foreign (chinese?) coin that I can't identify.
All the wheat pennies from the last search were concentrated in one area in front of a church.
So far I have been concentrating on the sidewalk areas and the road edge where the curbs were since they are already ripped up and they are digging so deep in the road bed itself (1.5 to 2 feet) that I am not sure if there would be much down that far.
I'll try to remember to post a picture or two when I get home.
