I spent 5 hours & 30 Minutes on the last of our deep ploughed Roman Sites. Land-Mag joined me for a couple of hours & added 5 coins to his collection:icon_thumright: Dad joined me for the last hour & a half. It was T-Shirt weather again:icon_scratch:

33 Roman Bronze Coins
Broken Roman Tweezers
Broken Roman Bracelet (3 strands) - First I think
My first Roman Plate Brooch in the shape of a Bird/Dove8-)
Circa 1780s Solid Silver Seal Matrix - my first silver type, which I hoped for to complete my collection:headbang:
Bronze Roman Panther Head:headbang::headbang: - Roman Krater Handle Adornment (Updated ID)

A really great outing!

I particularly like the coin reverse that shows the She-Wolf and The Twins. I think it's my favorite. Great history there. I found one myself back in 2001. Yours is in exceptionally nice condition.

VERY nice day in the dirt. Congratulations.

Chuck

Real Time UPDATE:

email from leading Roman Expert:

'There is no scale on the photos but I suspect that the item is 5-6cms ? In which case it may be from the terminal to a chair upright where the wooded upright part of the seat has been finished in a very elaborate way. It looks very interesting and Panthers are not common finds on Roman (?) sites.'

My rockie mistake, I forgot the scale which is only 3.5cm by 3 cms, so this may change their thoughts. To me it already seems very rare, I've only found 1 recorded which is only 'kinda' similar but they have no clue of its use.

Stunning piece! What a fantastic day for the CruTeam!! Keep us updated on the ID.

Cheers,

Buck

WOW! What a day Master!
Congrats for a panther!

Speechless..... Well done!! :occasion14:

I'm swimming, Crusade, I'm swimming!

Fantastic hunt as always Crusader. I would hate to have encountered that warrior with the panther head blade.

As for the seal, is there anything you can tell us about it? Is the horse common, or is it specific to a certain area or family?

:notworthy:

Solid Silver ones are very rare, but the horse's head alone is not enough info to track down any family. So I can't tell you very much really.

Awesome! I love all the Roman Coins and Relics! You did very good! Way to go! :icon_thumright:

New item on bucket list:
Go MDing in Europe

You're right - that was quite a day. Congrats on that awesome silver seal!

UPDATE:

After I have given the size to the expert, I got this reply:

'I will keep an eye out for any parallels and let you know if I stumble on anything similar'.

I thought this would be a hard nut to crack, we may never know the function of this rare Panther Head:dontknow:

I bow to your greatness.

Amazing, two roman animals in a year!!
I love this panther!

UPDATE:

Sorry to bump an old post, but I may now have an ID for this rare Panther Head;
Roman Krater Handle Adornment;
Antiquities

Note to Cru'Dad, update our records on this, I'm 80% convinced.

UPDATE:

FASCINATING ANCIENT ROMAN SILVER DOOR HANDLE WITH A PANTHER 200-400 AD | eBay
Doing a bit of poking around in ebay & found a match for this old post's: Roman Panther Head.
I wasn't sure what it was as its the only one I've seen, so thought it was either off furniture or a dagger pommel.
Now I think it broke of something larger like the one in the link. However, I don't agree it's a door handle, its from a large drinking jug.

Another possibility. Personally i don't think the handle is a match because of the open casting in the neck. Cast in one piece as a handle it would be solid. I'm leaning more to a top of whatever was decorated.

Did you see this other handle type? (not saying its that old)

I did. But this is also solid cast. With the hollow casting in the neck area of your Panther Head i think it was sitting on top of something. It also didn't look broken off.

It looks broken to me. But I know what your saying.
