Been a slow year for me and my son... While I found this Sunday evening I've not yet had a chance to post this. Unfortunately, this is the first large cent of the year for us...
Have found a few Indians and a few newer silver coins but not what we are used to finding...
Anyhow- my home is located on part of an original farm that has some early 1800s activity on it, but the exact site of the homestead is not yet known. The neighboring farmer just cut some hay in one field that I had been eyeing as a possible location, so fresh he didn't have time to rake or bale it. I had about 30 minutes, so I grabbed the Etrac and tried to scout out the site a bit between the loose hay.
My suspicions were confirmed - I found an iron patch. Because of the hay, I was just carrying the Etrac and had kept my digging tools on the JD gator.... about 5 minutes into it, I had one signal that just sounded too interesting... so back to the gator I went for the relic shovel. Much to my surprise, that almost too good to be true sounding signal which had a hint of an iron sound in it turned out to be Large Cent #1 for the year.
On the way back to the gator, I dug one more signal... it turned out to be a modern shotgun shell. So I guess my 10 minutes of detecting was not too bad with a 50% success ratio...
Can't wait to get back to that site!
Thanks for looking.
