Round heavy metal thing

Really heavy and a hole all the way thru it about 5 inches long and it was full of nails some was square nails. I thought maybe a magnet that lost its magnetic part now ? Looks like it has a S carved in it too

The nails you mentioned make me think that it had a wooden handle and somebody drove nails into it in an attempt to spread it in lieu of a wedge to secure it. There are all different types of specialized hammers out there, this could be one of them.

Years ago we had a tool we called a tamper. It was used as we set a fence post to tighten the soil around the post to make it solid in the ground. This tool had a heavy end on it that resembles the one pictured above.
