I was wondering how to get the fused rust off this brass tag ? It is covering some letters .

Darned good question. I wish I knew of a way. Perhaps just let it set for a long time and see if any more of it flakes off?

Electrolysis would probably damage the patina on the brass. :-\

Thanks for your reply BuckleBoy . I was thinking of soaking it in CocaCola . I heard it loosens rust .
I may even try some PB blaster (I can't find where I left it , last time I used it)

Mojjax, if you come across a method that works, please share. I have a few brass pieces ruined by rust as well.

Mojax please don't use Coca Cola :'( it will strip all the Patina from your find :'( you could try loosining the rust with Olive Oil, and use a tooth pick to remove the crud, when it softens a little :)

This is a tough project to save the patina and I suspect you won't be able
to. If I had it I would lightly tap the encrustation with a rounded hardwook
stick or handle with the tag lying on a flat surface. It will take time and
patience but you need to get that rust off to see how badly it is pitted
underneath the rust. When the tag is readable send another picture.

The only way to remove the rust is to use a supra sonic scaler.
Using chemicals or electrolysis will kill this nice intact patina!
