Rusty Gold Chain?

Dug this one out of the shallow surf two days ago. Didn't think much of it as it looked like a corroded copper chain. I pulled it out of my pile of trash finds yesterday and examined it more carefully. After scratching some of the links with a razor knife, a gold color began to emerge. Soaked it in white vinegar for 8 hours and then scrubbed it with baking soda.

Must be made of a real low karat to have so much corrosion. I plan on getting a gold test kit to check the purity. Weight of the chain is 9.6 grams. Before and after photos. The gold coin is 24 karat for color comparison:

I have had a chain that had soldered links and that was marked 18k. The color was right and it bent with out flaking or cracking. However when I acid tested it the results were about 9k. Its possible that it is a similarly made chain where the gold has been watered down.

Gold can discolor, it looks legit... Won't know till its tested. Great find, its hard to find chains !!

European gold can sometimes be rather low Karat, Like 7 or 8 so get a test kit

The chain has a small tag attached with a maker's mark. Looks like CC with a smaller symbol.

Thinking it's "CCé". The line over the final letter reminds me of an accent of some kind, so I guess it could be CCé or CCè.

A nice find ...but no good company would put clasps or rings on this chain like that. They would be soldered and gold as well. It COULD have been done later by the chains owner or someone else... so good testing is in order.

The Roman coin was purchased. That would be quite a newsworthy find to dig up a solidus on a Florida beach. 24k in theory, but technically more like 23k.

Yeah, accredited historians and archy's would be climbing over each other trying to disavow the legitimacy of any such find. It would be a lot of fun to watch though.

Rub the chain on the palm of your hand until it gets warm and smell it...if it has an odor, its not gold...Ill bet that chain smells bad.
