Bridle decorative shield.

You could google SADDLE POMMEL SHIELD and compare to some of those images, but I think that's a stretch. Doesn't remind me of anything on any of the saddles I've owned. But, there are some pretty sharp folks on here who might recognize what it is. If it wrapped around a little I could see it on the end of a strap.

It's actually not a strap end
A strap end had a slotted opening off the one end, with a rivet going through the leather strap.
Here is an example of one I dug (somewhat older) But it shows what I am referring to.

The one that is posted is actually classified as a leather Shield Shaped Mount, and the 2 integral rivets that have been broken off. Here is the examples of earlier ones, but the shield design is still present with the one recovered.
I would like to add it is a nice recovery, congrats

Pommel shield is a thing and saddle shield is also more or less understood by collectors of dug, excavated, exhumed items from the ground Lol.

Well considering that those saddle shields are 3x as big and say CS on them, and that they’re riveted on, not attached via prongs, and that they were on the saddle not on straps, I’ll simply say “congratulations, the one thing they have in common with the OP’s find is a vague shield shape.” 👏

None of the examples in the article match this example. This is an early 19th century item and the items in the article are 17th and 18th centuries. If you search “Sherman on his horse” you’ll see a civil war era photo which shows these items on the horse’s head, at the end of straps on the bridle.
