Have not met SADS and don't know him, but I hope everyone is OK.
Back in 1998, I went scuba diving at San Salvador Island, Rum Cay, Conception and Cat Key.
Flew into George Town (Exhumas).
All of these places look like they got damaged in Hurricane Joaquin, (maybe not as bad in George Towne as they are a little further west).
I am particularly concerned about San Salvador Island. !!
It is sparsely populated and almost certainly not prepared for a CAT-4 hurricane like this.
Power is out, as expected. Water?? And for how long?
Even back in 1998 the place sort of looked "3rd world" - like several bombs went off.
Once you got past that though, the visit was nice, and the diving was great.
The reality is the economy was nearly 100% supported by a military base, but that air base eventually got decommissioned.
What I saw was mostly the aftermath of that.
FWIW: There is a Club Med on the island. (believe it or not!).
There's also a local's version called "Club Fred", but that's whole other story - and not nearly as pricey or opulent.
Out of curiosity, I checked the Club Med home page and they said the resort had not yet open for the season, so no vacationers were stranded, etc..
It was set to open Oct 18.
Club Med's website said they expected power to be out for up to 5 weeks, and have therefore delayed opening until Dec sometime.
They also said their facilities were extensively damaged -- these are probably some of the better built buildings on the island.
The good news is all of their employees are accounted for, though many obviously suffered similar residential damage.
The whole place is almost certainly an absolute wreck!
One of these days something like Joaquin is going to hit a populated area of South Florida.
Then we'll see how well the "post-Andrew" building codes hold up.
