I got out woods hunting this after noon and started a new area on the side of a hill.
It wasn't long and I got a 75 reading on the DFX and I'm thinking silver.
I started digging and I see leather so I widen the hole to be carefull.
The leather was two inches down and the lowest point of the leather was six inches.
I pulled at the leather pouch and it came out and the coins slide out on the dirt
and that's when I seen two gold coins laying on top of each other.
Man I finaly got gold and wasn't sure what they were untill I got home right after I showed MPfish
My neighbor and detecting friend. He keep puting one in his pocket and I was saying don't rub them.
They both are 1914-s Saint-Gaudens,Twenty.Dollar gold. There is writing on the edge
e plu.ri.bus u.num. "Latin. One out of many. The motto of the U.S." and 13 stars.
Yes i'm very happy . It's my first and second gold coins ever. I have pounded that place many a day and a lot of days I came home with nothing.
I'll try to borrow mikes camera with macro setting to get better pic's since my camera is only for general picture takeing. I hope you all can experiance the finding of a gold coin or two.

I don't know what the leather pouch was. I thought there were 4 snaps but there are six snaps. Could have been a small purse with snaps inside. I'll try to clean the snaps to see if they have any makers name on them. Thanks EDDE.

I've got a question though. When you say your hunting woods did you research this area first or are you just hunting different areas of the woods? What was there before? This is an AWESOME FIND and want to do the same kind of research you are doing!

I haven't done any research. I hunt in 8 woods. One used to be a state park and now a city park. One I have to pay $5.00 to get in for a day. One woods is privet property that I have permission to hunt. I also hunt along the old train tracks that is city owned and is going to be paved for bike trails. A park woods will be a good place to hunt and if there is a hill I would start detecting the south to the northwest sides were the sun shines. Around trees on the hill sides.
It's a lot of work but it has paid of for me. Another is an old farm site that is a city park and woods.
A lot of people hunt in woods and they are finding some very good coins. Around here you would be lucky to find a silver coin in a mowed area in a park. roger

That is as good as it gets....been doin' this 30 years and found one leather pouch filled with V's , Buffs, Wheats, a Barber Dime and Quarter, nothing close to that...hope you saved the pouch, tells the whole story. Congrats!!!

Way to go Rodger!
I'm happy for you.
I know that when you put in the time, effort, and research like you do, good finds are sure to be made.
On the down side... How are you going to top that one?
CONGRATULATIONS!!

This is the stuff dreams are made of!
Congratulations!
Just a random walk in the woods? Hard to fathom!
Care to share any more info on the type of area you were hunting?
Were there any old roads or structures nearby? How far from the nearest town?
Natural springs? Caves? Fence rows? Anything else that would have drawn the owner to
hide this cache where he or she did?
Man! What a find!

Sorry, just realized that there are 3 pages of responses to this post.
Looks like some have already asked for a description of the area.
