Found this salt shaker at a old mill site knorrski and i are working and would like to know if anyone can i.d. the markings at the bottom. It says sterling(obvious sterling silver) has the #2804 and a s or g in a small square, followed by a m in the same fashion and then a f in what appears to be a shield.any info on value or type would be greatly appreciated. Also it was about 5 in.deep.

That's a NICE piece there bigrig, I'd definitely do the research on it, it may be worth some $$ cuz it looks very old (early 1800s) or possibly older!

Hey bigrig - your pics look like your camera is a fairly good one. Does it have a "Macro setting"?

If so, you should turn it on, get into some good light like in a window, and take a close up pic.

this will allow for a very detailed and highly clear up close pic which will allow us to see the markings, etc.

i can't get a good clear close up of the bottom.tried the macro but still didn't turn out very legible.

Cool piece and great photo update! I hadn't realized how small it was (unless you have huge hands). I'm trying to dig out my book of silver hallmarks to help, but my world is a mess.

Bigrig, I forgot to ask...would it possible to post an updated sideview of the piece? It looks cool and I'd love to see the detail. Thanks. -Ben

Wow!! very nice piece! Nothing to shake salt at. The shield would make me look towards british. They were well known for their silver craftsmanship. Biggest word i've used in awhile. Good luck bigrig
