Hey Guys. Its been awhile since I have been on here. Last night I dug this SC State Seal Button while hunting a colonial site.
The shank is broke. The back mark Says .... something ROCHE SUPERFINE very tough reading back. Looked through all my button books and Back mark books but could not find any back marks that is close. Can anybody shed some light on this?
Thank!

That's a beauty. Tons of Superfine back marks but nothing close to Roche. What's the size in mm?

What a BEAUTY . . .

That may be it. Thanks!

It is a E L ROCHE Superfine Back Mark. Looking for more info on this. I was told it is a very rare back mark. I will let you all know what I find out.

That's a beautiful button, Congrats on the save

From American Military Button Makers & Dealers; Their Backmarks & Dates Edward L. Roche, Charleston, S.C. Advertised in the Charleston Courier 4/5/1822, p.3, as a tailor making military & naval uniforms, Broad St. Roche was first listed as a merchant tailor in 1822 at 140 King (1824); 30 Broad (1829-1831) & 36 Broad (1835). He was "city treasurer" in 1837, his last listing.
*E.L. Roche"/Superfine. S.C. State seal, 2 pcs button, unlisted probably a Scovill product c. 1830-35. Courtesy Dan Binder. One also dug in Charleston by Robert Bohrn.

If it's unlisted in Tice, I'd contact Tice with the information on it, and a good photo.

Congrats on a GREAT button!
