We've reduced casualties a bit. Mandatory hunter safety and "ten mile" orange color requirements during firearm seasons helps.


One deer hunting tent camp in the early-mid seventies our host tossed a wire far up a white pine for an antenna.
He'd run the radio briefly at evening news broadcast time to listen for hunter casualty counts.
Seems there were a couple.
likely over 500,000 hunters afield.(?) Not all knowing where each individual was and not uncommon for own party members somehow being in the line of fire unseen.
Combined with the "accidents" of some who probably shouldn't have been participating.
 
As a primitive/traditional bowhunter, I've never been in the field during a rifle deer season, and that article is exactly why.
