The back is exactly the same as the front there is finish on both sides identically

you can see that both sides are the same here in this video. It couldn’t be a coaster because it would not sit flat.

Obviously, whatever it is was meant to be seen and must have complimented something else. I know that doesn't id it, but at least you can eliminate something strictly utilitarian.

stamped metal often has this look.... when in fact its just an effect of the stamping being pressed.
Now... I am not 100% on this... just seen some similar of above mentioned in this "style" and look.
