My son and I usually hunted every chance we got to get together, but this year the hunts where we both were together were rather scarce. But we did manage to get out twice this week and one day was only basically a button event and yesterday was much better, at least for my son. :)

After a couple hours of hunting one of my old favorite sites (3 Liberty Caps in one year from it) we got nothing but shotgun casings! :( So, we had about 25 mile ride home and I wanted to stop and finish up our morning hunt at a small site my son Dan found earlier in the year but we never really detected the site.

It did not take long to find the main area where a building was located in the early 1800s. Across the road is another site that is shown on a 1794 map and had yielded some good finds in the past few years, but we never suspected an additional site on the other side of the road, but there is one, whether it is connected to the other one or not, I am not sure.

We hit an area of solid iron hits after just some sparse hits and to anyone who does this type of hunting knows that numerous iron hits are music to the ears. Shortly after we entered the heaviest iron laden area, my son yelled to me he had a definite coin reading. I came over to confirm with my detector and the digging began. Rather hard digging but after about 5 minutes of root cutting and a few choice words, he got his reward, a 1841 Large Cent. I did some video of his recovery, congratulated him and we both started hunting again.

My hunt time was stopped almost immediately when Dan yelled, "got another coin reading". Only a few feet away from the 1841, he started digging another reading that I also checked and confirmed and another difficult dig through roots, but he was rewarded with Large Cent #2 for the day, a 1803 Draped Bust.

Of course now, the pressure was on me to find one, to make it a successful hunt for both of us, but the best I could do were some relics.
But Dan also made it a tad harder on me by within 2 minutes of finding his second Large Cent, he yells out to me a third time, "another coin reading". Again, I checked and the sweet sound or a large copper was there and Dan got some more exercise in digging and retrieve Large Cent #3 a 1826 Coronet.

We spent another half hour over our time limit trying to get me to find a coin, but it was not to be, which is fine, I was elated that Dan finished up the year strong with 3 more Large Cents and I still had this morning to find my coin from that site. Well, long story short, I hunted it hard this morning and only got a Best Gilt button and a broken piece of a Musket Trigger Guard. No old coins for me, just hunter dropped memorial pennies...........

Overall, Dan had a great year, considering the few hunts he did and most were short 1-1.5 hour hunts on his way home from work.
Both of us had great years, so no heartache on not getting any coins lately, I have done well in both coins and relics this year. Working on a year end post this week.

I posted a closeup of the ceramic piece I found in one of the holes I dug, any ideas on manufacturer?
