A quick hunt today with the Safari & Coiltek WOT.
From my hunted out site I Got a few buttons,
I have 2 nicer script A's, both shankless.
this is a great example of an early hand drilled 'Turret' ;D (it's a Wedge, not a turret.
Thanks Steve!)
another 'Cookie', which gave up an 1857 Eagle Cent. (barely)
A heavy cast oval piece, I would think it a brooch or barrette, but way too heavy,
and just one attachment broken off the end. anyone got ideas :help:
and a stunning early Naval button, condition just seems too good for an early flat military button.
what looks like an old pewter plate from a childs tea set or dollhouse ??
Brass cover from an artists paint pot 'Tilmann'? , it has '10NV' in the center, I think NV was an abbreviation for the Netherlands ??
another brass cover, "Solar" with foliations, :dontknow:
And a couple more brass whatsits, one appears to be a water meter, the free spinning rod has impellers inside the housing, I think the other may be an early carburetor, it has a needle and seat inside one of the lead fittings.
thanks for looking at my finds! Best to you all

That's a beauty of a button Herbie. You always bring back the goodies every time. Do you have much competition for sites up there? No spoon this time? HH, Quindy.

Re: Scrappy Script Artillery, Perfect Turret Shank !

I like the lantern flame regulator of 19th century .... Congratulations Herbie!

Nice script arty button. I have not seen that variety!

Re: Scrappy Script Artillery, Perfect Turret Shank !

Lol, I see you followed my advice to keep up the good work! We might have to start calling you "cookie monster" :laughing7: Seriously though, really cool and finds as usual! :sunny:

Re: Scrappy Script Artillery, Perfect Turret Shank !

nice lot of finds.
"perfect turret shank" is a wonderful phrase. :headbang:

Re: Scrappy Script Artillery, Perfect Turret Shank !

Congrats on the buttons Herbie! The navy is beautiful. The script A has a drilled eye shank. The "turret" shank has two holes drilled perpendicular to each other through a round turret cylinder. See Tice's Military button book, page 3, item 3, for an example.

I am having some trouble making out the script A. Is it this type?

Steve, how'd you know I have Tice
That's what I get for Id'ing from memory :-[
I am retitling as perfect drilled wedge shank :D
Thanks for the heads up !
It is different than your example (Yours is a beauty! I have a 2nd & 3rd reg of that type, though from a salty environment)
This one is a thin hi convex with 'Fancy' script.
I found 1 or 2 before & had an ID.
will follow with an update for that button.
Best digs to all and thanks again for your replies

That's great info on a mysterious relic!
I never would have come up with that

Re: Scrappy Script Artillery, Perfect Drilled Wedge Shank !

Back again,
regarding that button
a quick search through my 2010 finds folder doesn't find the match on this button, neither could I find my post on it.
short on time right now, but will try again to find the photos of the other/s?
Too many photos and bookmarks that are only categorized by date ::)
the photo in the OP is poor, but I see a large rounded top A with scrolling at the bases.
Steve, do you agree the 'navy' button is a civilian ?
Thanks all

Hi Quindy,
I had found it strange that I have never crossed paths with another detectorist since I began 16 months ago :dontknow:
a few days back, while walking back to my truck from a hunt, I saw a man swinging in a nearby park.
I went & spoke with him, neither of us had found anything stunning, but we discussed some previous finds & sites, I was happy to have met up with him.
he said there was going to be a local club starting up.
I gave him a card, & wished him best digs, I hope to hear back from him.
No spoon that day! got a strange one yesterday, will be posting later.
Funny, the only thing that makes me
'late for work' anymore is MD'ing stuff :laughing9:

Re: Scrappy Script Artillery, Perfect Drilled Wedge Shank !

Hey there,
where in NH are you (generically)? i'm near the seacoast area and like to hunt in portsmouth or the more rural towns. have found a few interesting items here and there, but i still consider myself new at md'ing since i don't get the chance to go out as often as i'd like.

Oh no, that navy button is definitely military  There are a number very similar in Albert's book, like NA 81, NA 85, and NA 86. I think the drilled wedge shank on the artillery button is quite unusual for a military button of that period, at least from ones I've seen.

Re: Scrappy Script Artillery, Perfect Drilled Wedge Shank !

Too cool

Re: Scrappy Script Artillery, Perfect Drilled Wedge Shank !

CeeJay, sent you a pm about NH hunting :hello:
Steve, Thanks for the info on that Navy Button, so much not listed in Tice
What era? 1812 or later... I think it might be a later discard judging by condition.
still cannot find that earlier button in my files, I definitely remember this from the high convex and copper color, it may be Light Infantry/reg Artillerist script, the shank is certainly a sign of an oldie.
here's some new pix, maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way.
It is difficult to get clear focus all around the convex. BTW it's 18.5 mm.
Thanks for looking!

Re: Scrappy Script Artillery, Perfect Drilled Wedge Shank !

Herbie,

The reason that your navy button is in such great shape is because they were heavily gilted to withstand the sea salt atmosphere aboard ship. I recently dug one from the same era (roughly 1808 to 1821). Mine was actually backmarked "For Sea Service" (see pics)

As for you artillery button, it is not the Regiment Artillery (Alberts AY 32) that you show below your pics. Note the rim around your button. What you have is Alberts AY 40, which is 1st Regiment, Light Artillery, I am 99% sure of this...

Steve

Re: Scrappy Script Artillery, Perfect Drilled Wedge Shank !

Very nice finds Herbie! :icon_thumright:

I love the look of the 1st Regiment, Light Artillery Button!
Amazing condition on that piece! :notworthy:

Of course my favourite of your finds is the old brass oil lamp burner! :laughing7:

Dave

PS. Now you can stick that fork in me cause I'm done! :laughing9:
