Scratch / Acid testing question..

Just tested an old silvery white ring (calling it the "FLE" ring) with scratch / acid test kit results are.

Silver: Pass
Platinum: Pass
10k Gold: Pass
14k Gold: Fail

What do you think the ring is made of?

did you test it for 10k? I have a couple of fake 14k gold jewelry items, makes you sick but the acid test keeps you from finding out elsewhere. but you did prove the rest was good, those kits are really worth it.

Hi dirtlooter, yeah I wrote 10K pass , above. My problem is that I don't know what passing for the platinum acid and silver acid, and 10k gold acid test means ! In all three cases the material from the ring on the ceramic stayed.

Judging by the design possible silver or Stainless steel, which SS will pass the plat, gold n silver acids... and can be rather heavy. If it is silver the 18k acid will turn it blue in color as it dissolves, and some SS is magnetic also. My guess would be sterling or silver. Test it with the 18k...

And Plat it would be heavy as a lead sinker...

Platinum is almost twice as heavy as lead or silver (both lead and silver have about the same specific gravity with lead being slightly heavier), platinum is just a little heavier than gold.

18K acid test did seem to give the line a blue like look. It is non-magnetic, reads very high on my E-Track 45 to 47 conductive.
Would silver pass on the platinum test typically?

Sounds like it is a silver ring then if silver passes the platinum acid test commonly.

Just tested another sterling ring with the platinum acid and got same result.

Pretty sure the ring is silver now =)

the 18k acid turning it blue is pretty difinitive imo.most jewelers use it over the silver solution.
