Looking to connect with some researching. Been all over and can not wait to meet some serious searchers.
Found a half uncovered well structure in a creek. It had 5 objects in it 16 feet deep. A flat sandstone rock 2 feet down, a red burnt sandstone rock 4 feet down, a whole and a half part of chert 10 feet down, a shard of ceramic 11 feet down. At the bottom was a board 3 foot long resting across the 4 foot wide structure. Hand dug dry stacked structure with a tree on top.
Any ideas? BTW hello all

I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard MDNAME! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

Pictures would be most helpful.

Welcome to the forum from Oregon! Good luck on your search for information!

The science department at our local university stated that the wood sas oak and no age, the shard of tile is still to be answered as to the age.

Well bottoms have options.
Deliberate ones usually get employed.
Soil types factor. But strength of walls is critical. How water enters if low in amount (a poor recovery speed condition) A soft wall should be rocked up/bricked or held secure. So not to erode and collapse, but to keep water from being disturbed.

Digging below first water a few feet allows better settling of any impurities /silt sand ect..
And reduces "clean out" frequency.

Your rocks could have been placed to keep people and critters from becoming trapped after the "well" was abandon.

Not sure of the clime on your site, temperature at certain depths in certain conditions are steady.
If we were chilling milk or cream or just putting perishables in water to keep cool , we'd want coolest water. Depending on how long we store such goods.

Your not noting a dipper , bucket , or other things on well bottom hint that it was cleaned out before disuse. Or very careful users prior. (No kids) . l.o.l..

People were there to build it. And to use it.
Plus there was other water near.
Should be relics to find detecting in the area. People being people.

Thanks for the pictures. Appears to be an old seep well. Dig them close to a body of water and the water "seeps" in. Might find something cool down in the bottom that someone threw in!

The inside is 4 feet across by 16 foot deep.
Only 5 objects in the whole thing, like I stated before 2 rocks, 1 piece of tile, chert stone, and a board in the very bottom. Someone filled the whole structure back in and placed all items in different levels.
Thanks for reading.

Revisited today,
Punched a hole in the back wall where I found the churt stone in the hole and dug back about 6 foot and found burnt wood remains, the same distance away from the last rock down in the hole from the top.
Strange to find burnt wood remains 12 foot down outside of the well hole.

The red circles are the spots where I found the rocks in the hole the single red circle is where I found the chert stone.

Did you check for old bottles?

Really curious if you found a bottomless well.
Oh yea Welcome to TNet
