Searching Cru's 2nd field

Cru and Shaun, here are photos of my finds. Over 60 buttons, that must be a record for me. For me I think the spinlead and the short cross John was my best finds. Really enjoyed the search, and the weather was just great! Thanks again Cru for your help. Before that we had found almost nothing in one week!

Re: Searching Cru's 2nd field

OK Cru, it cleaned up pretty good considering the state it is in. If you would ask me its a guy standing next to a entry way, calling someone with his mobile telephone in his left hand. In his right hand he is holding a 'thing'. Sorry but my determinations are not the best in the world, but I am sure I will hear that. I just didn't know people had mobile telephones way back then....

Greetings...

Re: Searching Cru's 2nd field

i think he is actualy standing next to a kiln picking his nose, there doesn't seem to be anybody else about so he'll probably eat it :tard:

i suppose we're all searching for something ;D

Ah...Shaun... how do you think up those kind of stories, of course he's not picking his nose! That was not done in those days, they thought you could get pregnant from that stuff. :icon_study: But really, if you look at the eyes, and inbetween those is his nose, its quite a way from his fingers. But maybe he already got it out of course. :icon_king: I think I will replace the photo with a what larger one, then its easier to see any buggers. BTW you can also see a video about that subject by a mr.pregnant...(so maybe its true after all).... :icon_scratch:

Re: Searching Cru's 2nd field

You made the image so large, my 100mbps couldn't even load it all. I can see only half of the image. The object in his right hand is a sword with tassells(?). He looks to be a Civil War period soldier (17th century), the button is a lot later probably 1850ish. Its probably telling a famous story of some sort, but don't know what. VERY INTERESTING. Quite rare I would think.

Re: Searching Cru's 2nd field

hope he didn't forget and try picking it with his right hand then!

Re: Searching Cru's 2nd field

Yet another amazing hunt from overseas ... those are some cool looking buttons and coins

I guess its your screen resolution mine is set 1280x1024 and it appears to cover 3/4 of the screen. I wanted to make it larger for you so that you can see the details. But if its not showing up completly I will make it smaller. I will look further and see if I can find it someplace. Do you know some good button sites? Greetings....

It was having trouble loading it, not viewing it on the screen. It now works at work, so its either my machine or problems with Tnet last night.

I think its a famous story/picture. Guy Fawkes??

I don't know any good button sites other than Colchester metal detecting holidays.

Hey Cru, in the 7th photo, the object on the bottom right, second from right, could that be a pan weight? BTW what is a pan weight anyway?? There are a couple of small marks inside it that look like a small sword and a crown. There is another mark but can't make it out. I thought it was a button because of the small point in the middle, but saw a pan weight on one of your photos and think its about the same. Its 22.4mm and 6.63grams, which is pretty heavy for a button top....

A pan weight is also known as a trade weight. They are called that as the scales they sat on had a flat pan. The sword mark is a 'verification mark' on the weight. These were for legal reasons, if being used in trade etc... However most of these weights were just kitchen weights. If you can make out all the marks & there positions ie. Sword, Crowned 'letter', & other marks then you can tell how old it is. I would say yours is late Georgian/early Victorian. But would need a good photo to ID the date.

Hard to work out.

Can you see a letter under the crown?

You mean directly under the crown (at the yellow arrow point), or do you mean on the opposite side of the thing (red arrow point). On the opposite side there seems to be something there or I am dreaming - its only 14:30 so that's ok).

Anyway if its the yellow arrow it appears to be an 'I' (or i), darn pretty small to see good. Sorry to be so bothersome!

As weights goes this is a pretty early one!

James I - 1603-1625
(The mark at the bottom is a ewer)

GOOD WEIGHT!
