There must be some kind of a legal loophole to be able to find some coins from this ship?

In the ‘Great Big Story’ video, Barry Clifford who owns the legal rights to artefacts from the Whydah says: “I made a promise to myself early on that I was never going to sell the treasure, that we would keep it all together… My crew and my family, and people who have worked with me over the years have all felt the same way about preserving this for our cultural heritage.”
He has held to that but, in the early days of the recovery efforts, a small number of coins were gifted to investors in the recovery project and family members. The salvors later attempted to buy these back but were unable to acquire or locate all of them… certainly three coins reached public auction and there may be another two out there in private hands.
The three that reached auction were sold by Sedwick & Associates (sometimes more than once) and are now in private collections. Most recent hammer prices were:
- A Mexico City 4 reales, sold for $27,600
- A Potosí cob 8 reales, sold for $24,000
- A Mexico cob 4 reales, sold for $16,450
